The first PhD paper by Dore Engbersen of the Public Administration and Policy Group @WUR has been published in Global Environmental Change 🎉. This work tackles one of the emergent topics in the climate change adaptation literature: transformational adaptation (TA) to climate risks. Dore’s paper breaks new ground by moving past conceptual discussions to create a practical framework and empirically assess 51 cases of climate adaptation in the Netherlands. The findings show that: 🔹 High expectations are set for TA, yet none of the 51 cases fully meets the diverse criteria from academic literature—not even the world-famous "Room for the River" projects.  🔹 Trade-offs between the six characteristics of TA used in the framework are inevitable, something Katrien Termeer, Art Dewulf, and I recently explored in our own conceptual work (see: https://lnkd.in/eWkvzfUQ). 🔹 Given the above, we likely need diverse transformation approaches to truly build societal resilience to climate risks. Dore’s work also raises a key question: is it even useful to frame adaptation as transformational vs incremental change? ✨ Woensdagochtend zijn we met de eerstejaars studenten van de Wageningen University & Research opleiding Economie en Beleid op bezoek geweest bij de Gemeente Wageningen! ✨ De ochtend begon met een enthousiaste presentatie van gemeentesecretaris Jasper De Wit over hoe de gemeente is georganiseerd, gevolgd door een rondleiding door het stadhuis met Karianne Radstake. Daarna kregen de studenten de kans om in gesprek te gaan met gemeenteraadslid Martin Riesmeijer en wethouder Guido van Vulpen. In de gesprekken kwamen hun dagelijkse taken en verantwoordelijkheden binnen de gemeente aan bod, net als belangrijke uitdagingen voor Wageningen: duurzame inrichting van de openbare ruimte, bestaanszekerheid, asielopvang, (mentale) gezondheid, de samenwerking tussen WUR en de gemeente, en nog vele andere onderwerpen. Een waardevolle ervaring voor de studenten om het werk en de dynamiek binnen de lokale overheid van dichtbij te ervaren! Deze week sloten we het eerste deel af van het living lab over een gezond en klimaatbestendig platteland in Brabant. Met een exposite in een prachtig landschap over: probleemdenken in het heden, de gewenste toekomst en de kleine betekenisvolle stapjes daarnaartoe. Belangrijke ingrediënten voor dit succesvol lab: aansluiten bij energie en netwerken van het gebied; verbinding kunst en wetenschap; niet alleen samen klagen maar ook samen onderzoeken en samen doen; exposite en gesprek daarover goede manier om resultaten ook te delen met mensen buiten de living lab bubble. Attending #COP16 to follow the negotiations of the follow-up process of the #KMGBF with its 23 targets for biodiversity and organising two side-events. The opening was an amazing manifestation of humanity's unity in diversity.

🌍 Excited to announce that I've been selected as expert for the scoping meeting of the upcoming IPCC's Seventh Assessment Report (AR7)! In December, I’ll be joining experts from around the world to discuss the scope and structure of the next assessment report with member governments. Scoping meetings like this are crucial in shaping the agenda, ensuring that the report is not only scientifically rigorous but also policy-relevant and action-oriented. AR6 has demonstrated that climate change continues to challenge both mitigation and adaptation efforts, underscoring the urgency of addressing every increment of warming. This will be a key consideration as we work on setting priorities for AR7, building on the latest science to guide future climate action. Excited to share that our latest short paper on the 2023–2024 #farmerprotests in Europe has just been published! 🚜🌍 These continent-wide demonstrations highlighted the growing tensions between agricultural policy reforms, environmental sustainability, and farm livelihoods. The paper explores the protests' triggers, the varying root causes by country, and the policy responses that followed. As we look to the future, it’s crucial to move beyond simplistic dichotomies to develop a vision for a #foodsystem that fosters synergies between farmer interests as well as environmental and social objectives. 👇

Erg blij met het verschijnen van de bundel "Tien essays over de internationale verwevenheid van ons #voedselsysteem", onder redactie van Arjen van der Heide en uitgegeven door The Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP). Het doel van de bundel is om inzicht te bieden in wat de internationale verwevenheid betekent voor de ruimte die de overheid heeft om te sturen op de ontwikkeling van het voedselsysteem. Een ontzettend prangend vraagstuk, gezien de uitdagingen waar ons landbouw- en voedselsysteem voor staan, alsook de huidige politieke context. De bundel bevat prikkelende bijdragen van collega's Noelle Aarts, Bettina Bock, Hans Dagevos, Liesbeth Dries, Floor Haalboom, Martijn Huysmans, Cees Leeuwis, Peter Oosterveer, Krijn Poppe, Karin Astrid Siegmann en Han Wiskerke over: 1) de relatie tussen de kwaliteit van leven in Nederland en elders via het voedselsysteem, 2) relevante ontwikkelingen in de Europese beleidscontext die van invloed zijn op de mogelijkheden om richting te geven aan het voedselsysteem, en 3) de verschillende perspectieven die mensen vanuit hun verschillende rollen in de Nederlandse samenleving op de verwevenheid van het voedselsysteem kunnen hebben. Zelf schreef ik een essay getiteld "Tussen competitie en solidariteit in de Europese landbouw". Daar waar Nederlandse politici en boerenorganisaties graag wijzen op het belang van een ‘gelijk speelveld’, rijst de vraag wanneer het Europese speelveld, gezien de verschillen in landbouwkundige condities, sociaaleconomische structuren en politieke voorkeuren, dan als gelijk of rechtvaardig aangemerkt kan worden? Aan de hand van vier spanningsvelden - inkomenspolitiek, liberalisering, gastronationalisme en verduurzaming - reflecteer ik op de vraag waaruit de voorwaardelijkheid die in de solidariteit besloten ligt bestaat.
