Tuesday night’s European Premier of Legion 44's first movie about #CDR was nothing short of an emotional call to arms for the carbon removal revolution! 🌍 ✨ 🎥 The film masterfully captures the urgency of addressing climate change, the promise of carbon dioxide removal, and the many pathways to making it a global reality. It was especially inspiring to see the 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆—a powerful reminder of the untapped potential for carbon removal across diverse geographies. At remove, we’re proud to support the globalization of CDR, fostering innovation and collaboration across regions. 💚 The gathering was also a heartwarming celebration of the 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, bringing together so many familiar faces, including Thomas Käslin from Cotierra, Felix Harteneck from InPlanet, Pascal Michel from Everest Carbon, Sebastian Manhart and Hannes Junginger from Carbonfuture, Max Zeller from Carbon Removal Partners, Christoph Beuttler from Carbon Gap—and countless others. It’s moments like these that show how far we’ve come as a field and remind us of the collective strength we can harness to make a difference. But perhaps what stood out most was the audience: nearly half were not yet part of the climate world. Seeing new people engage with CDR fills us with hope and underscores the importance of breaking the bubble. 👏 Congratulations to the Legion 44 team for this incredible milestone—and to everyone working tirelessly to turn ambition into action. Would you like to watch it yourself? Follow Legion 44 for more news coming out in the next few weeks on how to do so!

The remove team got together one last time this year in the vibrant CDR hub of Zurich 🇨🇭 We spent two days developing the strategy for our upcoming impact milestones and left feeling energized about the exciting things we have planned. (Stay tuned!! 👀) We organized this team meet-up around two CDR-focused events: 1️⃣ 🎪 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲’𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱, co-organized by Women In Carbon, Google Zurich, swisscleantech and Carbon Removal Partners. ↳ At the event, we got the hear from policy makers and integral market players about the central role that Switzerland can play in establishing a European "Carbon Valley." The room was packed with #CDR enthusiasts with deep and complex questions. 2️⃣ 🎪 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, organized by Innovation Booster Carbon Removal. ↳ At this event, remove's co-founder and MD, Hans Westerhof, gave a keynote speech on the differences between the carbon removal sector and other more mature sectors (spoiler: nobody actually needs CDR...yet) ↳ Marking the end of the first CDR Booster cohort, the audience also heard pitches from the 6 Innovation teams that Hans and Rawan coached over the last 6 months and we were presented with their upcoming projects (as well as the batch of selected teams for the next cohort)! It was amazing to engage with the thriving CDR ecosystem in #Zurich and we can't wait to share more about what's in store for us at remove!

In the podcast with Zara A., Marian discusses the unique reality of the carbon removal industry (including some harsh truths) and how this requires some business model creativity in order to survive until a regulatory regime kicks in. We've popped a quick snippet in here for you to get a flavor of the conversation. 👂Like what you hear? Two exciting updates from the remove network this week! 🌟 1️⃣ 𝗔 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 💰 We’re thrilled to share news of what we believe is the first crowdfunding campaign by a European #CDR company. After attracting over £4 million in investment and closing two successful seed funding rounds, Wild Hydrogen has announced that it will soon offer the chance for anyone in Europe to own a share in their CDR venture, supporting their goal to build a 1 MW commercial demonstrator. Check the comments for the pre-registration link! Wild Hydrogen is pioneering carbon-negative hydrogen and biomethane solutions, pushing the boundaries of a more sustainable energy sector. 2️⃣ 𝗔 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗬 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 🏆 Stefano Cappello, Founder and CEO of Limenet, was named EY 2024 Entrepreneur of the Year in the #startup category in Italy this past Thursday. Limenet is advancing ex-situ, ocean-based carbon removal using calcium bicarbonates. They also recently unveiled the world’s largest facility for storing CO₂ in calcium bicarbonates in the sea. Congratulations to Stefano and the team at Limenet on this impressive achievement! 👏

Our co-founder & managing director Marian was in India last month to launch remove’s first-ever India cohort! remove had the pleasure to participate and be on a panel for two CDR events - Carbon Reset Summit and Futures Summit. It was great being on the ground in India connecting with suppliers, enablers, system actors, policy makers and buyers. Here are three takeaways from our first trip to India: 1️⃣ ⏰ 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄: we're seeing an unprecedented/outstanding momentum in startup activity and international buyer interest in Indian suppliers with companies like Mati Carbon and Alt Carbon from Frontier leading the way. The Carbon Reset event perfectly catalyzed this energy, bringing together the ecosystem. 2️⃣ ⚖ 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency's recent addition of durable carbon removal methods like biochar and nature-based solutions like agroforestry and the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in Phase 1 of India's new offset mechanism marks a significant milestone for CDR in the Indian Carbon Market framework. This is the first recognition of any CDR methods under the Indian Carbon Market (ICM) framework, setting a powerful precedent for the future of carbon markets in India. 3️⃣ 🌾 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮'𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹: CDR is viewed as an opportunity to drive economic development that can deliver multiple benefits - additional income for subsistence farmers, improved soil health, climate resilience, and better air quality by addressing challenges like stubble burning. The pieces are falling into place as India emerges as a key player in the global carbon removal landscape. 🌱

📣 💡 Exciting findings alert! We conducted the largest inquiry into what it means to be a CDR startup globally. And we are very proud of the final product. Teaming up with sus.lab | ETH, we dove deep into the world of European CDR startups once again. Our explorative survey of 69 European CDR startups has revealed a movement towards diversified business model strategies. Through follow-up interviews, we gained deeper insights into their strategic adaptations and the reasoning behind these changes. A sneak peek of what we discovered: 🛠 Pursuing the traditional business model of selling CDR credits on the VCM forces startups to vertically integrate multiple activities outside of their core expertise. 🦾 Startups deviate from the traditional business model, often leveraging the strengths of their technologies, to realize alternative revenue streams. 🤝 These evolving business model strategies point to a transition in the CDR market towards more classic B2B market dynamics. ♻ Devising a CDR startup’s business model strategy is a dynamic, ongoing process requiring continuous evaluation and adaptation to the market environment(s). 🇩🇪 SpeeDR dating in Munich! Only professional, of course. We started last week strong, co-hosting the fourth edition of our informal #CDR Dinner in Munich, alongside Siemens Financial Services and Center for Digital Technology and Management (CDTM). And it was a buzzing full house of CDR-focused discussions with people from various specialties. 🤝 We enjoy cultivating thriving and vibrant CDR ecosystems, by bringing stakeholders together, encouraging everyone to connect in person and share their knowledge. We were very excited to see many new faces, as well as familiar ones, in the crowd. It's always great to catch up with members from our alumni startups in person as well. Special thanks to Yannik Birkhahn and Felix Doerpmund for co-organizing another successful event. #carbonremoval #accelerator #ecosystem #Munich
