STORY – Euroseeds highlights the inspiring testimonies of women across the #seedsector - researchers, plant breeders, phytosanitary technicians and more— who are shaping the future of horticulture through #Innovation #Vegetablebreeding Meet Fátima Tena Fernández, Crop Researcher Pre-breeder Watermelon, Squash and Beans at our research & breeding station in Spain RIJK ZWAAN IBERICA SA: 'Since I was a child, nature has fascinated me—whether it was plants, insects, or animals. My curiosity about the plant world led me to pursue a career as a biologist, and today, I’m proud to be part of a breeding team focused on coordinating gene bank material. This is the first in a series for #WomenInScience. Stay tuned for more stories!
Why a career in science? 🔬 🌱 The testimony of Fátima Tena Fernández, Crop Researcher Pre-breeder Watermelon, Squash and Beans at Rijk Zwaan research & breeding station in Spain: 'Since I was a child, nature has fascinated me—whether it was plants, insects, or animals. My curiosity about the plant world led me to pursue a career as a biologist, and today, I’m proud to be part of a breeding team focused on coordinating gene bank material. Our work involves conducting experiments to study external characteristics of plants, including propagation and screening for resistance traits. One of the most exciting moments for me was discovering new resistance in courgettes against the New Delhi virus—a breakthrough we identified through research with fungus and viruses under controlled conditions. To women interested in science and plant biology: Stay curious, ask questions, and never stop learning. The journey might be challenging, but with belief in yourself and the courage to take risks, you’ll unlock opportunities that can change the world!' 🌍 ©️ RijkZwaan #GrowingTheFuture #WomenInScience #plantbreeding #TalesFromTheField
