Nestled in the Colombian Amazon, the Puinawai Natural Reserve is the second largest national park in Colombia, covering 10,984 square kilometers within the Guyana Shield. As a transition zone between rainforest and savannah, this national park constitutes a unique, highly diverse ecosystem. Within the frame of the European Space Agency - ESA Science for Society Program, SarVision, under the leadership of Marcela Quinones, mapped the ecosystems of the national park for the year 2020 alongside its flood frequencies over 13 years (2007-2020). The final product is the result of integrating the former two: the land-cover map, made with optical (Sentinel-2) and radar (Sentinel-1) data of 2020, with flood-frequency data generated with ALOS PALSAR and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 time-series for the period 2007-2020. This integration provides a more complete and nuanced understanding of the landscape diversity in this area. The attached animation provides a sample of our work. It contrasts a Google Earth image with our 2020 map, illustrating that it would have been impossible to map the flooding frequencies relying solely on optical imagery. In this regard, the ALOS PALSAR systems' time series play a crucial role, as their L-band frequency enables them to penetrate the dense foliage of the forest canopy and “see” the flooding dynamics underneath. The spatial resolution of the map is 10 meters. The map’s legend can be found in the comment section. #amazon #amazonrainforest #colombia #colombianamazon #gis #GIS #remotesensing #map #radar #sentinel #sentinel1 #sentinel2 #alospalsar #rainforest #floodedforest #forest #conservation #nationalpark #naturalpark #landcovermap #landcover #esa #ESA #europeanspaceagency #timeseries

Radar data is less used than optical in remote sensing due to the higher complexity involved in its handling, but, when harnessed, it provides significant advantages in several use-case scenarios. Among them are its capacity to monitor the Earth’s surface through clouds, smoke, and dense foliage, and its effectiveness in detecting and quantifying forest degradation. Below, you can see a false color image and a time-series, covering the period 2016-2023, showing a frequently cloud-covered area of the island of Borneo where mangroves are being gradually cut down and replaced by fishponds. These Sentinel-1 images, processed by radar processing expert Boris Kooij, with resolutions of 5m (false color) and 15m (time series), highlight the critical role of radar in environmental monitoring. #radar #deforestation #mangroves #borneo #timeseries #sentinel #copernicus #remotesensing #satelliteimagery #mangroveconservation

SarVision is a frontrunner in near real-time deforestation and forest degradation monitoring, thanks to SarSentry, our cutting-edge radar time series analysis algorithm. SarSentry is based on the analysis of Sentinel-1 radar images, allowing us to detect forest anomalies through dense cloud cover and smoke, conditions that render traditional optical sensors ineffective. For the SELINA (Horizon Europe) project, we are implementing SarSentry to monitor deforestation, forest degradation, and regrowth in the frequently cloud-covered island of São Miguel and the fire-prone Peloponnese. See below some results from an area of São Miguel. The legend can be found in the comment section.
