Up to 5.5 million tons of carbon stay in the atmosphere each season because #plasticpollution is weakening Antarctic #krill’s ability to store carbon, according to a new study. 👉 Krill play a vital role in the ocean’s carbon cycle by locking away carbon in the deep ocean through their fast-sinking fecal pellets. If #krill overfishing wasn’t already a crisis, this is just adding fuel to the fire. And for what? Krill are being plundered for omega-3 supplements, the health benefits of which are still debated by scientists. These can easily be replaced with more sustainable plant-based alternatives, allowing krill to focus on what they’re meant to do: lock away carbon, feed #whales and #penguins, and maintain the balance of the ocean’s ecosystem.
