In recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women last week, we want to highlight an important yet often overlooked issue: street harassment. Violence against women takes many forms, but street harassment is one of the most common. It normalizes the objectification of women’s bodies and perpetuates unsafe public spaces. To address this issue effectively, we must tackle the significant underreporting gap in street harassment. Without this data, the true scope and impact of this behavior remain hidden. At SafeTogether App (available on Android) and Bånded, we are working to close this gap. Our apps provide an accessible platform for reporting incidents, connecting with trusted networks, and fostering community support. By gathering data from those who experience street harassment, we aim to illustrate its widespread nature, empower individuals to alert others, and bring communities together to create safer public spaces.
