Meet Juste, our newest team member and a F&B sustainability expert. With a strong background in food and agribusiness, Juste is set to lead impactful change. We asked her to share her thoughts on the biggest challenges and opportunities in sustainability today.
Q: Quick intro, could you tell a bit more about yourself.
I’m originally from Lithuania and moved to the Netherlands to pursue my career in sustainable agriculture. I graduated with a degree in International Food and Agribusiness, where I became passionate about being a game changer in our food system. I’m excited to continue making an impact in this sector.
Q: What drives your passion for sustainability?
What drives my passion for sustainability is witnessing the changes in our environment firsthand—like biodiversity loss, increasing storms, droughts, and deforestation—especially as I travel to different places. Seeing these issues across various landscapes deepens my understanding of their urgency and inspires me to be part of the solution. We have a responsibility to protect the planet for future generations. The challenge of finding innovative solutions to these sustainability issues excites me, as it involves creativity and collaboration across various fields. I’m particularly drawn to how sustainable practices can improve both environmental health and the quality of life in our communities.
Q: What do you think are the biggest challenges, especially in the food and beverage industry.
We're in a complicated situation regarding sustainability in the food and beverage industry, making it challenging to prioritize the various interconnected issues we face. From food waste to resource depletion and packaging pollution, each challenge demands attention. Changing mindsets is crucial. It starts with individuals recognizing what they can do better, whether it’s reducing waste, supporting local producers, or making more sustainable choices. When consumers take action and advocate for responsible practices, it creates urgency on the industry to adapt and innovate. This consumer demand can drive significant change, prompting companies to prioritize sustainability in their operations. Ultimately, fostering a culture of sustainability—where everyone feels empowered to contribute—will be key as we navigate these complex challenges together. Collaboration across the industry, alongside informed and engaged consumers, can lead to meaningful progress.
Q: What’s your go-to way to unwind after a busy day/week?
My go-to way to unwind after a busy day or week typically involves a few calming activities. I love reading a good book, which helps me escape into different worlds and ideas. I also enjoy listening to my vinyl records while sipping a cup of tea; I've recently started collecting records, and it's become a delightful hobby. Occasionally, I pick up painting, which allows me to express my creativity and relax. These activities help me recharge and maintain a balanced lifestyle.
