We also won the competition for a new area development in Eindhoven!! The project revolves around the Schellensfabriek, a historic textile factory in the city centre. Blending with the factory’s existing character, we’re designing an open and colourful new urban fabric — a social urban ‘phenomenon’, in which the users will shape its function and identity. An Amsterdam-based studio for architecture and urban design. We create unconventional spaces.
Over ons
Studioninedots is an Amsterdam-based practice for architecture and urban design. We create spaces that spark a sense of wonder. Whether we make a house, a public building or an urban concept, every design has its unexpected quality. Because we see spaces that stir a feeling as an essential human need. Spaces that are thoughtfully designed, yet where something can emerge that you couldn't predict upfront. Established as a collective in 2011, Studioninedots consists of 25 people today. The practice is led by founders Albert Herder, Vincent van der Klei and Metin van Zijl, and associates Ike Gronheid, Jurjen van der Horst, Stijn de Jongh and Wouter Hermanns. To us, disruption is the counterpart of innovation. So, in a playful way, we challenge the existing elements and boundaries of architectural convention. Embracing the experiment helps us create new types of places that provoke a wider interpretation of their use. The identities and needs of the people who will occupy a space are the foundation of our design approach. This way, we form new places that have a positive impact on everyday life. We excel in projects that (re)activate and transform complex urban locations. The ever-evolving context increasingly calls for unconventional solutions, which lead to more collective and circular ways of living. By distilling the issue, we discover the project’s essence and translate it into exceptional architecture. From an awareness of context, clear interventions and a love of detail and craft, our quest is to conceive spaces of inherent beauty.

Big news: we’ve won the pitch to design a new hotel, art, and event space at Hembrugterrein in Zaandam! Our design consists of one single FRAME, that combines the raw with the sensual, old relics with new bright colours, and obscurity with meticulous illumination. During yesterday’s presentation of the 2024 Rietveldprijs, Wisselspoor phase 1 received the DUIC Public Award! Nearly 1,300 Utrechters cast their votes over the past few months, with over 32% selecting Wisselspoor as their favorite. The jury was particularly impressed by the urban and landscape integration on the former NS site, which preserves the raw, industrial atmosphere. Congratulations to team Nimeto for taking home both the Rietveldprijs Jury Award and the Truus Schröderprijs! Photography by sebastian van damme - fotografie. Headed by Urhahn | stedenbouw en strategie, we worked on the urban plan, the building envelopes and the architectural quality plan of the new Amsterdam living and working island Oostenburg, which is now coming to life. With its history as a Dutch East India Company shipyard, the Stork shipbuilder’s workplace and from this century as the site for the INIT building, Oostenburg now is the final large-scale development in Amsterdam's city centre. The new island brings together its industrial heritage with an urban density new to Amsterdam, quality public places to reside and the growth of a community. We’re highly honoured that De Jakoba has been awarded the 2024 Arie Keppler Prijs!! De Jakoba is the winner of the ‘Home in the City’ category. “The jury formulates one simple question to which an Arie Keppler Prijs winner must answer a resounding “yes”, which is: does it help? Does a project help with the major problems we now need to resolve? Does it inspire social cohesion? Does it set the tone through a radically different approach? [...] This simple control question is in line with the premises of the award, standing out as it is a wide-ranging prize for spatial quality. The Arie Keppler Prijs is about spatial quality in the full sense, in spirit of the prize's socially committed name giver.” De Jakoba could not have been built without the early and intensive collaboration that went into it, with Ymere, Dura Vermeer, Byldis and VDNDP. Winning the Arie Keppler Prijs is a crown on our teamwork! In the new urban district of Belvédère in Bordeaux, we're thrilled to unveil the finalised Facette! The design is Studioninedots' response to the request for a place that fosters new ways of working and offers the flexibility, collaboration and diversity essential for today's entrepreneurs. For at a time when work is increasingly untethered from specific times and places, the building's true value lies in its innovative spaces for interaction. Facette boasts a sequence of distinctive collective spaces, leading users from the ground floor, along the facade to the roof. These spaces drive the social community within the building. The building's communal ambition and enticing, multi-purpose spaces set Facette apart as a building that fits today's working needs. Finally, we can share first glimpses of the new plans for the Niemeyer site in Groningen! The historic tobacco factory is set to be revitalised as a new destination and economy for the city, with cultural and hospitality features, digital industry and education breathing new life into the area. With our plans, the now-closed Niemeyer site will be opened to the city. By arranging the public programme in a new way, the area will provide an extra space to add to the city of Groningen. As many as seven defined buildings onsite will be given a new function and be connected together and to the neighbourhood through eight inciting interventions. By maximising preservation and spatial experience, we create a vibrant site suited to both the industrial heritage and ambitions of the city. Visualisation by Absent Matter. Studioninedots unveils InterSphere: our manifesto for the unprogrammed city! For the city that provides space for all people to flourish is becoming increasingly scarce. For InterSphere, we joined forces with architectural historian Marieke Berkers and designer and art director Sean van den Steenhoven. We ask ourselves: how can the unexpected city continue to exist, where not every square metre is planned or programmed, but where people have the freedom to decide for themselves how to use the space around them? InterSpheres is the name we give to these unplanned zones inside and outside buildings, in public areas and in oversized collective spaces. A city with InterSpheres is a city waiting to be discovered, a city full of surprising qualities, with room for personal initiative and harmonious multiple use, with scope for imagination and innovation. Such a city allows people to prosper mentally and physically. It enables them to interact easily with one another and forge a sense of community. This will create a city with a distinctive individuality in programme, atmosphere and appearance. One that provides new social and economic opportunities for people. With this manifesto, we hope to spark a public discussion about what type of city we want to create. We want to inspire with various examples of ways to enrich the city with InterSpheres. We want to illustrate their value. Such a design approach means that we let go. We must be confident that spaces whose function is not predetermined can, over time, develop to reflect the wishes of residents and other users, with a uniquely appropriate programme.* *More in comments!
