This week, the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 18th session of the Intersessional Working Group on Reducing GHG Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG-18) is shaping the regulatory pathway for a low-carbon future in shipping. Key topics under discussion: ▪️ Mid-Term GHG Reduction Measures – Refining the economic and technical framework for emissions reduction, including the Goal-Based GHG Fuel Standard (GFS) and potential global carbon pricing mechanisms. ▪️ IMO Life Cycle GHG Assessment (LCA) Framework – Ensuring a standardized approach to evaluating emissions from alternative fuels and technologies. With crucial decisions ahead at MEPC 83 in April, these discussions will directly impact the commercial and operational landscape of the maritime sector. A clear and effective regulatory framework is essential to accelerating the transition toward net-zero shipping by or around 2050. EU ETS & FuelEU compliance costs: the $100B question for shipping A recent case study reveals the staggering compliance costs facing major shipping companies due to EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime. Between 2025 and 2050, the total estimated costs are: ▪️ CMA CGM: $54 billion ($16.7B EU ETS, $37.0B FuelEU penalties) ▪️ Hapag-Lloyd: $25 billion ($8.0B EU ETS, $17.0B FuelEU penalties) ▪️ COSCO: $32 billion ($9.7B EU ETS, $21.9B FuelEU penalties) The key driver? Time spent in EU waters. ▪️ Average compliance costs: ~$300 per mT for CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd, ~$200 per mT for COSCO. ▪️ In EU-only operations, costs can exceed $1,000 per mT.
