💡 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐊𝐏𝐈𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧? Going through my e-mail I ran across an e-mail from FoundersToday (I get a lot of these “startup” focused e-mails, newsletters, e-books, etc.). This time, driven by recent discussions around dashboards, I was interested to read what these “Founders Today” were recommending. Most VCs use a very shallow dashboard (if they use one) but what Founders Today presented in their 20-liner was appalling: it summarized its “findings” in “Cash Metrics”, “Operational Efficiency” and a few key takeaways which included Revenue, burn rate and headcount. This is like taking the temperature of a human being and assuming that because the thermometer reads 37oC the person is doing splendid. As each #startup has its own challenges and its own personality, a real #dashboard contains not only the standard metrics (the temperature if you like) but also the specific topical indicators that make it a “personal” dashboard. A #VC interested in not only understanding the progress the startup is making, but also how to support it properly in its growth process, requires a lot more than “just the temperature”.

Attended the Silicon Catalyst Fall 2024 Portolio Company Update, hosted by Tarun Verma. I was representing TD Shepherd & Co. B.V., a new partner in kind of Silicon Catalyst, helping startups with fundraising and M&A activities. It was exciting to see how far Silicon Catalyst has come and how important it is to the semiconductor industry with its network of advisors, angel investors, and partner companies. We had great presentations from the CEOs of the portfolio companies. Met some old friends such as Chris Day, Paul Pickering and Mahesh Tirupattur from Analogbits, who compared analog designers to wine makers 😀 and provided an excellent wine for the reception.
