🚀 𝗣𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲: 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 Yesterday, over 100 healthcare professionals and researchers gathered at Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) for the Pioneers in Health Care (PIHC) Award ceremony. The PIHC innovation fund awarded vouchers to groundbreaking projects that aim to improve patient care and enhance healthcare efficiency. For the 11th year in a row, this initiative - a collaboration between Medisch Spectrum Twente, Hogeschool Saxion, University of Twente, Deventer Ziekenhuis, and ZGT - has highlighted the power of sustainable partnerships between knowledge institutions and healthcare organisations. 🔬𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 & 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 From 37 proposals, 10 projects were awarded a €60,000 grant, focusing on critical medical challenges and technological advancements. 🌟 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Patients with congenital kidney diseases often suffer from severe potassium and magnesium deficiencies, leading to life-threatening symptoms. Yet, treatment options remain scarce. Researchers Jeroen de Baaij (Radboudumc) and Dimitrios Stamatialis (TechMed Centre - University of Twente) develop advanced kidney tubule models by combining patient-derived tubuloids with polymeric fiber technology. Their goal? In het kader van het EUVECA-project is onderzoek gedaan naar de leerstrategieën van verpleegkundigen werkzaam in het ziekenhuis, voor het ontwikkelen van 21e-eeuwse vaardigheden. Uit elf interviews met verpleegkundigen zijn vier persona’s ontwikkeld die zowel de leerstrategieën illustreren als wat verpleegkundigen nodig hebben om te leren. De nadruk ligt op: ✅ Praktijkgericht leren ✅ Samenwerken ✅ Formeel en informeel leren ✅ Reflecteren ✅ Continu professioneel ontwikkelen In de praktijk is het belangrijk om rekening te houden met de leervoorkeuren en leerstrategieën van verpleegkundigen om het leren op de werkplek te faciliteren en te verbeteren. 🌟 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Every year, around 3,000 life-saving surgeries are performed in the Netherlands to treat carotid artery stenosis - one of the main causes of strokes. While these surgeries help prevent disabling strokes, they can lead to post-surgery disruptions in blood flow patterns, increasing the risk of artery narrowing again.   Prof. Michel Reijnen (University of Twente) and Dr. Anne Saris (Radboudumc) are using Velocity Vector Imaging (VVI), an innovative ultrasound technique, to compare two common surgical methods. 🌟Succesvolle Inspiratiesessie: 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐳𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨 𝐓𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞/𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝! Op 20 januari trapten we in het TechMed Centre (Universiteit Twente) de landelijke Slimme Zorg Estafette 2025 af met een inspiratiesessie over digitale zorginnovaties. Tijdens het avondvullende programma presenteerden zorgprofessionals uit Twente en Salland diverse zorginnovaties aan elkaar, zoals digitale zorgpaden voor kindergeneeskunde, transmurale telebegeleiding voor hartfalenpatiënten en digitale ondersteuning in het zorgpad voor bariatrische patiënten. Alle innovaties, ontwikkeld door de topklinische ziekenhuizen, eerstelijnszorgorganisaties en kennisinstellingen in onze regio, onderstrepen het belang van samenwerking voor succesvolle integratie in zorgprocessen en organisatiebrede veranderingen. Naast succesverhalen was er ook ruimte voor briljante mislukkingen. In de rubriek ‘Van Veelbelovend tot Vastgelopen’ deelde het ZGT haar ervaringen met de ontwikkeling van een serious game om patiënten meer te laten bewegen. Ondanks een positief prototype en goede feedback liep men vast in financieringsproblemen en eigendomsgeschillen. Het belang van een vroege validatie, realistische verwachtingen en heldere afspraken werd benadrukt.  Ook hebben de deelnemers samen met een expertpanel enthousiast gediscussieerd over kansen en risico’s op gebied van eHealth in onze regio. Een systematische stakeholderanalyse vanaf de start is bijvoorbeeld essentieel om technologie in de zorg van meerwaarde te maken. Dank aan alle deelnemers vanuit zorg, wetenschap en bedrijfsleven voor het delen van kennis, nieuwe verbindingen en positieve energie! Samen blijven we in onze regio kennis delen en met elkaar optrekken in zorginnovatie. In mei organiseren we weer een vervolgbijeenkomst. On Wednesday 29 January, 14:30-16:30, there will be a UT Climate Café on 'Planetary Health and Green Medicine'. Gerard van der Steenhoven (Special Advisor at the Ministry of the Interior, previously Director General of the KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) will give a presentation about 'Climate change and its consequences for life on our planet'. What is the interaction between climate change and biodiversity? And what is the relationship between climate and human health? Maroeska Rovers (Scientific Director of UT's TechMed Centre) will talk about 'Green Medicine – Bridging Sustainable Technology and Global Health for a Resilient Future'. Our healthcare system causes a huge amount of pollution. To combat this, a transition is needed. How can we, as a technical university, play a role in achieving this? After these two presentations, we will have a discussion with the audience, and there will be time to have a coffee and a chat with colleagues and students who are interested in finding solutions to climate challenges.
