PALARI #4: SKILLS, COLLECTIVIZING AND QUEERING EDUCATION January 5th, 17:00, Grand Theatre, Groningen After the holidays, many of us have to face a harsh reality: the school year continues. To ease the transition from festive dinners and hangovers to lecture halls, we present a back-to-school edition of Palari. How can we de-hierarchise and renew art education through a queer lens? What does it mean to collectively ‘unlearn’ and share knowledge in a playful, non-oppressive way? During this edition of Palari: Queer Salons, we will explore the potential of collective knowledge creation, non-hierarchical exchange and queer pedagogy within the art world together with Kirti Soekaloe. It will be a playful and connecting afternoon, offering space for reflection, experimentation and stepping into each other's shoes through a playful exchange of skills and ideas. With themes such as discomfort, collectivity, crosslinking and creative problem solving, this edition of Palari offers a unique opportunity to look at art education from a queer perspective. Expect an afternoon of inquisitiveness, playful interaction and critical reflection in a cozy and communal setting. Kirti Soekaloe is an interdisciplinary artist and art educator based in Rotterdam. With a background in Media & Culture, Gender and Postcolonial Studies, Fine Art and Art Education, Kirti brings experiences as an artist and developer of educational art projects to this programme. Kirti collaborates with art institutions such as TENT, Melly, MaMA and Framer Framed, and gives queer and decolonial master classes for education teams. Kirti´s work is rooted in a pedagogy of discomfort, breaking stigmas around collectivity and creating learning environments where social safety and accessibility are paramount. Tickets and more info:

Over ons
the pink cube. is founded by a queer art historian. That is, an art historian who is queer and a historian of queer art. In the short amount of time they have been active in the art world they have been confronted with resistance towards the subject of queer art, either by those who hide behind claims of ‘positive discrimination’, or those who found it too difficult to acquire ‘museum-worthy’ objects and artefacts and therefore dismissed the subject entirely. The latter is no surprise. The history of the LGBTQ+ community and queer culture remain largely in the shadows. We know the stories of pain, violence and oppression but are less familiar with those of love, beauty, power, resilience and productivity. Large portions of queer history are intangible. They are purposefully omitted from the canon by those in power, or even destroyed by force. Additionally, under the threat of such oppression queer people turn to immaterial and therefore indestructible manifestations of their culture. Fashion, dance, language, humor, art and community. Queerness is carried with us on our bodies and in our minds. If you want to destroy our culture, you’ll have to destroy us first. The result however is that we now exist on a plane of our own, outside the canon and outside the history books. In light of this, it is now time to bring our culture to the surface. A 100 years from now, a historian looking to immerse themselves in queer history can not turn to anti-trans legislation, news reports about violence perpetuated against queer people, or online communities dedicated to the destruction of our culture. We have to prevent this. It is time our stories are told by us, and no one else.

THERE IS STILL TIME The phrase ‘there is still time’ haunts the main character in the sci-fi horror movie ‘I Saw The TV Glow’ (dir. Jane Schoenbrun, 2024), who learns that he is living life in an alternate universe and his real self, a teenage girl with psychic powers, is buried underground in another realm. However, he refuses to believe this and continues to live and age as the man he is in this reality. The movie became popular with the transgender community, adopting the phrase ‘there is still time’ to encourage other closeted trans people to come out, no matter their age. For everyone who comes out to one of our public sessions to participate in Our Exquisite Corpse, we made this poster as a gift. Hand-printed using letterpress printing blocks and reproduced on the risograph, both at GRID Grafisch Museum. https://lnkd.in/edpfSMw4

The Pink Cube presents Palari: a series of queer salons hosted in Grand Theatre! Polari, Palare, Palari - different terms that refer to a code language spoken by queer people, sex workers, street performers, carny folk and criminals. An anti-language that allowed people on the margins of society to speak freely. For decades, the queer community has attempted to create spaces that are for them alone. The Pink Cube therefore presents Palari: Queer Salons where the queer community can freely speak, think and discuss among like minded people. Palari: Queer Salons offers a space for individuals seeking to explore (visual) art within a queer framework, discover the rich history of queer culture, and engage with the local community. Each salon will center around a unique theme and we will feature diverse guest speakers. This first edition is dedicated to Aaïcha Bergamin, a transgender pioneer from Amsterdam. Alex Bakker, historian and author of Transgender in Nederland: een buitengewone geschiedenis (2018), will talk about Aaïcha and what she has done for the emancipation of trans people in the Netherlands. Aaïcha Bergamin passed away in 2014 and was buried in an anonymous grave. Unacceptable, according to Bakker, who raised funds to give the pioneer a worthy headstone. Now, ten years later, the grave rights to her resting place must be renewed. Therefore, in addition to discovering an important story in the history of trans care in the Netherlands, there is also the opportunity to donate for the preservation of her grave in Amsterdam. Entrance for this first edition is free. Get a ticket here: https://lnkd.in/gvbuAGJ8 📸: Alex Bakker by Marc Driessen.
