As the adoption of endobronchial valve (EBV) treatment - a minimally invasive option for COPD patients with severe emphysema - continues to grow worldwide, we can expect a wave of post-treatment studies, critical to more understanding on how the therapy impacts patients over time. This recent study in #RespiratoryMedicine from Jens Bakker et al. brings interesting insights into how bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) using endobronchial valves (EBVs) influences diaphragm function in patients treated. Emphysema often causes hyperinflation, flattening the diaphragm and impairing its efficiency. The findings show a correlation between the treatment and improved diaphragm curvature, potentially enhancing lung mechanics and quality of life. The diaphragm index was calculated from inspiratory CT scans using a tool developed by UMCG relying on our LungQ's lung segmentation. What is the number of airways that are typically visible on a chest CT? The most common answer from clinicians will be: 100-200. In fact, there can be up to 300-1000 airways captured by the scan, but a lot of them very small and hardly visible. Visual assessment can only evaluate a fraction of all the airways, while estimating the corresponding severity values. With help of Artificial Intelligence the automatic analyses of the CT images can identify all the airways captured on the scan, up until the smallest ones, precisely quantify them and provide grounds for any further bronchial analyses.
