🌏 EUDR update An important vote took place yesterday at the European parlement: not only the delay proposal was voted but also an amendment to the law, proposed by the EPP, lowering significantly the ambition of the regulation. You will find below the conclusions of the vote. Long story short, the implementation is indeed postponed by a year. Some, but not all, parts of the amendment have been approved. Now, the Parliament, Commission, and Council go back to the drawing board to finalize how the approved amendments will take shape in practice. We strongly believe that delays and amendments can undermine the EUDR’s ultimate goal: deforestation-free supply chains. Instead of diluting the law, we must focus on equipping companies with the right tools to comply efficiently and effectively. With the right solutions, businesses can align with EUDR requirements, protect forests, and thrive without unnecessary challenges. Like many of our customers and suppliers, we were initially confused by the mixed, sometimes contradictory, information about EUDR. We waited for clarification, just like everyone else. Then, we decided to dive into the actual law ourselves. Turns out, the text is pretty clear—it covers different supply chain situations and can be implemented. However it’s definitely tough to understand. It took our compliance specialist a few days to work through it, and she is already familiar with legal language. It is no surprise that smaller companies, already stretched thin, haven’t had the time to figure it all out. After months of speculation and industry pressure, the European Commission has proposed a 12-month delay in implementing the EU Deforestation Regulation. 🌳 Try to imagine a European forest without ash, oak, birch, and spruce trees. Difficult, right? Forests of the old continent will dramatically change in the course of this century. Emblematic trees, integral to every European's childhood memories, will see their population decline—some even facing the threat of extinction. Some drivers of this crisis: 🌲 Monoculture, leading to biodiversity loss 🌞 Global warming, causing extreme temperatures and droughts that weaken trees The IUCN Red List reports that 42.3% of tree species are now endangered. Every species on this list is at some risk, from least concern to critically endangered. 🌿 🍂 🌱 Now, more than ever, sustainable and responsible forestry is crucial. When done right, it ensures forest renewal, preserves biodiversity, and adapts to inevitable changes by introducing resilient species. At Timberhub, 98% of our suppliers are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (PEFC International) certified. In order to support smaller sawmills that find certification challenging, we’re developing a code of conduct, allowing them to join our network while upholding our commitment to sustainability. Here’s a look at the price evolution of two popular dimensions for sawn timber — 17x78 mm and 23x100 mm — on our marketplace over the past 6 months in Germany. 👉 DAP prices: They reflect prices paid by our customers in Germany 👉 17x78 mm: This dimension is harder to source, so it consistently remains more expensive than 23mm. 👉 23x100 mm: Nearly every central European sawmill produces this size as sideboard and it is trending upwards over the last 6 months Despite fluctuations, our marketplace confirms the market trends: there's been a steady overall increase in both dimensions' prices over the last six months. As we move into Q4, sawmills are pushing for higher prices, but with demand still uncertain, the market response remains to be seen.
