As the most recent winner of the Marina van Damme Scholarship from TU Delft, I'm honored to attend my first General Assembly organized by Marina van Damme Network at Wageningen University & Research on Saturday 1st of February 2025! Established in 2003 with the aim of supporting women’s careers and stimulating their development, the Marina van Damme Scholarship has been able to help numerous female engineers realise their ambitious dreams. The grant is intended to help winners to broaden their knowledge or explore international opportunities in the form of a study programme, internship or project in the Netherlands or abroad. Read more about my career ambitions and plans on the Scholarship via this link: https://lnkd.in/eXdnTeqR This year the General Assembly was combined with the ceremony where the winner of 2024 Gesine Harms, alumna from Wageningen University & Research, presented her ambitious career plans in pursuing MBA and was granted 9000€ by University Fund Wageningen. • 🤷♀️ Life can be unpredictable, and sometimes, challenges arise in ways we never expect. A third-year MSc student at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) recently faced one of the toughest periods of her life. A cross-border fraud that had been ongoing since July drained not only her energy but also put her in a severe financial crisis, disrupting her thesis progress and placing immense strain on her family and herself. "During this time of uncertainty, I learned about the Louise O. Fresco Fund through my thesis coordinator and program director. The possibility of receiving support gave me hope at a moment when I was unsure how to continue my studies or even afford basic living expenses. When I received the email confirming the financial aid, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief and gratitude. This support has allowed me to cover essential expenses and, more importantly, regain the peace of mind necessary to focus on completing my thesis and moving forward." "The Louise O. Fresco Fund is more than financial aid. It is a lifeline for students facing unforeseen hardships. It ensures that education remains within reach, even in difficult circumstances. To everyone who contributes to initiatives like this: thank you. Your generosity has a profound impact, and I am deeply grateful for the support that has helped me reclaim my path." • 🙌 Refugees who are waiting for a residence permit in the Netherlands cannot yet sign up for a full degree programme at a university. The WURth-while programme offers them the chance to take courses at Wageningen University & Research. Eythel Rose is a refugee student from Pakistan who received support from the programme: "The WURth-while programme is such an amazing initiative, helping so many refugees like me who cannot pay the fees to study in Wageningen. It allows us to do something with our lives and give meaning to our lives. I am so grateful to the people who are contributing to this course. I hope they realise what their support means to our lives." Thanks to support from our Friends for the WURth-While programme for refugee students, Eythel and many other refugee students can take courses at WUR even in adversity. • 💝 €25.000 donation for the Paul Speijer Fund thanks to a special goodbye collection! When former CEO Gerard Backx said farewell to HZPC, he asked those that wanted to give him a goodbye gift, to donate to one of our named funds: the Paul Speijer Fund. It was a fund close to his heart, as Gerard Backx and the late Paul Speijer were scientific friends. Paul was dedicated to the development of plant science in local African institutes. Therefore, his wife Nicole started the Paul Speijer Fund after his death to pursue his goal. To this day, the Paul Speijer Fund provides scholarships for promising students from lower income countries in Africa, so that they can pursue a Master’s degree in Plant Sciences at Wageningen University & Research. Gerard Backx: ‘Like Paul and Nicole, I really endorse the development of powerful and independent African plant institutes." Gerard crowned his farewell by handing over a check of €25.000 to Nicole. A wonderful gift for future talents at WUR. We want to thank Gerard and everyone who contributed to this great gift!
