Propellers face significant challenges when operating in icy conditions due to the physical interactions and stresses caused by ice. When the propeller blades strike ice, especially thick or hard pieces, the impact can cause damage such as deformation of blades, dents, cracks, or even fractures in the blades. These damages will often result in: - loss of efficiency - imbalance - engine overload resulting in reducing rpm and speed The imbalance caused by damaged blades can be restored by equal cropping and grinding. Blade deformations do no longer need to be cropped, which often resulted in reduced blade surface and subsequent additional efficiency loss. Afterwards the cropped pieces needed to be rewelded in a workshop. Using the cold straightening technique and special equipment developed by UPE and partner Plug & De Boer, blade deformations can be restored without the need for cropping. These technique has proven its significant advantage and is accepted by IACS-members LR, ABS and NK. Qualified personnel and equipment can be mobilized by road or air freight transport around the globe within a very short time frame.
