Advancements in molecular and cellular neuroscience have deepened our understanding of the relationship between the brain, behaviour, and mental health. However, a broader theoretical framework is still needed to fully comprehend these complex interactions. Igor Branchi, Senior Researchers at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and new IAS Fellow, proposes a new theoretical framework: the Context Theory of Constrained Systems. It is a fresh perspective, which can be applied to other disciplines as well, offering deeper and newer insights to address complex problems in neuroscience, such as psychiatric disorders. His theory suggests that while context shapes behaviour, biology sets its limits. More than just a reaction, behaviour plays an active role in influencing brain function. Branchi argues that recognizing these concepts is critical for understanding emerging treatments, like antidepressants and psychedelics, which rely on context to be effective. Where outstanding researchers bridge disciplines, scales and paradigms to unravel wicked problems
Over ons
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has established its Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) to advance cutting-edge interdisciplinary research that addresses complex scientific and societal challenges. It brings together outstanding researchers from all fields to generate novel ideas, expand knowledge frontiers and develop new interdisciplinary research methods. The IAS runs a fellowship programme and initiates a variety of activities. Most events are typically small-scale and flexible in an almost 'homely' ambiance, offering researchers a haven to ponder, debate and reflect. The institute actively involves world-class scientific leaders in its activities. More information can be found on our website www.ias.uva.nl.

What makes some interventions to change public opinion succeed, while others fail? Understanding how public opinion changes is about uncovering the causal mechanisms that stay consistent across interventions, as well as ensuring real-world actions align with predictive models. On January 28, Lourens Waldorp, new IAS Fellow and Associate Professor at University of Amsterdam, will dive deep into these factors using real life examples, such as vaccinations, while focusing on uncovering invariance properties that help predict the outcomes of interventions and guide more effective policy-making. Interested in learning more about designing effective policies? Join the kick-off event on January 28 at noon (lunch included!)

What happens when financial institutions start viewing the challenge of aging as a business opportunity? As financial institutions explore new ways to profit from longer lifespans, longevity finance is emerging as a field that transforms aging from a social challenge into a speculative opportunity. But what are the societal implications of turning the quest for life extension into a business? Join us for a lecture by our new fellow Giulia Dal Maso, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at Università Ca' Foscari Venezia / National University of Singapore, on November 25 in which she will dive deep into how this paradigm shift challenges the conventional views on aging, redefining it by merging the pursuit of financial growth with the quest for life extension. She will also explore the impacts of this quest, raising new questions about access, inequality, and the politics surrounding the future of aging. #LongevityFinance #Aging #Economics #LifeExtension Register > https://lnkd.in/eS5-2eVX More about Giulia Dal Maso > https://lnkd.in/ewH2XJQP
