Introducing our new ‘how to’ plastic waste management video tutorial series! 🌍♻️ Our FINILOOP team has been hard at work creating a series of practical, step-by-step video tutorials designed to help improve plastic waste management and empower stakeholders across the waste value and service chain —from households separating waste to businesses and waste workers. 👇 Below you can take a sneak peek at the first in this series: How to Separate Waste at Home One of the simplest yet most powerful actions we can take as individuals is proper waste separation at home. ♻️ Opening the door to a world of financial and social opportunities in India 🗝️ Today we celebrate with local partners, TRUST OF PEOPLE, in the city of Amritsar as 20 more informal waste workers have been supported in obtaining their very own identity (aadhaar) cards, a gateway to vital government support and access to finance. In cities across India, informal waste workers (IWWs) play a key role in helping to keep streets free of plastic waste and ensuring it is kept in the loop. However, too often they are undervalued and struggle to earn a decent living. A reality which step-by-step our FINILOOP programme is helping to change. This includes running awareness workshops on social security schemes and helping to facilitate access to essential documents such as identity cards. These cards help to formalise waste workers position in society and enable them to access education for their children and important social security benefits, for example, three bus journeys per day and 5kg of rice/lentils per month. Alongside this they enable bank accounts to be opened; a key first step to saving. Following on from these kinds of workshops, skills training is also provided to facilitate integration of IWWs in formal solid and plastic waste systems as a next step on the journey to improved livelihoods. Thank you to community mobilisers in Amritsar for facilitating this most recent social security workshop! 👉 FINILOOP is currently active in three cities across India: Udaipur, Amritsar and Jaipur. A healthy start to the year for students in Uganda! 💦 💪 Kaboyo Primary School lies on the outskirts of the picturesque hillside village of Musugu, Uganda and serves 938 children. Until recently, the school lacked adequate sanitation facilities putting students and staff alike at risk of disease. This year has started a little differently though with safe and sustainable toilets in place and an enthusiastic group of 34 students (pictured) ensuring they remain a clean and welcoming space to use. All led by English teacher and health club supervisor, Harriet Kajobe (pictured): “The goal for [health club] members is to learn everything about health and hygiene, and the importance of clean water. They then share that knowledge, both at school and at home. They learn how to keep their bodies clean and healthy, how bacteria spread, and what menstruation is. The health club members - there are 34 of them right now - are also responsible for keeping the handwashing facilities next to the toilets filled with water and ensuring they work properly. We didn’t have good toilets here in the past. They weren’t stable, they were unhygienic, and teachers and students had to share them. That was uncomfortable because there should be some distance. Teachers standing in line for the toilet next to students undermine our authority. Thanks to FINISH, we could build new, proper toilets at school. We paid for part of it with the school budget, and a few parents contributed to cover the costs. In the health club, we also involve the students' parents in our work. That’s important because children who have access to clean toilets at school but not at home still get sick, and they infect others. During parent meetings, we ask about the situation at home, and we tell them about FINISH. Some parents really don’t have the money to invest in a new toilet and don’t qualify for a loan. In those cases, we look for ways to help. Sometimes the municipality steps in, and other times neighbours chip in to pay for a toilet for someone who can’t afford it. We almost always find a solution." To date our FINISH Mondial programme has facilitated the construction of more than 2.2 million toilets in communities across Africa and Asia. ♻️ 🗺️Mapping the Solid Waste Management Landscape in Kakuma Refugee Camp ♻️ 🗺️ 👉 https://lnkd.in/gHhDz_Wh In Kakuma Refugee Camp, which is home to a resilient community of over 200,000 displaced people, increasing overcrowding places immense pressure on essential infrastructure. One often-overlooked challenge is solid waste management. However, managing waste effectively is crucial—not only for safeguarding public health but also for supporting environmental sustainability and creating economic opportunities. As part of the brand new SWEEP (Sustainable Waste Employment and Environmental Progress) partnership, WASTE alongside Last Mile Climate, the Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp, and other key stakeholders is working to address waste management challenges in displacement areas like Kakuma. As a first step, WASTE, with over 40 years of SWM experience, was commissioned to carry out a solid waste management scoping study in Kakuma Refugee Camp and the adjoining Kalobeyei settlement. 🌟 The findings shed light on how waste is currently being handled, the existing gaps and opportunities for sustainable solutions. Discover more here in our latest article >>> https://lnkd.in/gHhDz_Wh Join us on this path, and together let's build more sustainable waste management systems that not only protect our planet and health but also strengthen the local circular economy and create livelihood opportunities. #Sustainability #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy #Kakuma Sophie van den Berg Jeroen IJgosse Kajetan Hetzer Alejandro Martin Rojas

Journey with us to Kakuma Refugee Camp today and delve into the world of solid waste management (SWM) as we unpack the findings from our recent SWM scoping study ♻️ 🗺️ Over the last decade the global refugee population has tripled, according to the UNHCR, increasing to 43.4 million in 2023. People are continually being forced to flee their homes in response to poverty, climate disasters or conflict. People who have often lost everything and each need a safe place to shelter with access to basic human services. The infrastructure needed to shelter refugees is rapidly put in place to cater to short-term emergency needs. With numbers continuing to grow and many settlements remaining for decades, it is essential to take a more coordinated long-term approach and include the often overlooked element of solid waste management. Cue the SWEEP partnership. Together with Last Mile Climate, the Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp, and other key stakeholders, we are working to address waste management challenges in displacement areas. As a first focus of the partnership, we had the privilege of conducting a scoping study in Kakuma Refugee Camp and the adjoining Kalobeyei settlement. Discover the study below and together let’s work towards more sustainable solutions 👇 #Sustainability #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy #Kakuma Sophie van den Berg Jeroen IJgosse Kajetan Hetzer Mahan Charmshir John Mathai Jakob Øster Muvunyi Consolee Maurice Onzere

✨The FINILOOP family shining bright like a diamond! ✨ Last week we were delighted to gather together with our amazing local partners – TRUST OF PEOPLE and AspireLabs - from our plastic waste free cities programme, FINILOOP, for a mid-term reflection workshop in Udaipur, India. Over five days, we shared invaluable insights, challenged assumptions, dived into business development and dreamt ahead to 2030. At the heart of discussions was our multi-stakeholder diamond approach—a framework designed to connect key city stakeholders, identify opportunities and gaps, and create an enabling environment for local systems to flourish. A special shoutout to our dynamic facilitator, Sam Boering from MDF | Empowering People, Creating Impact, whose energy and creativity helped us to turn ideas into actionable steps. 💪♻️ As we set our sights on 2025, we're excited to use these learnings to strengthen plastic waste value chains and keep plastic waste in the loop longer.
