We take pride in the successful implementation of projects which we believe have been made possible through and thanks to our WaterWorX-supported long-term and ongoing partnership, built on trust and mutual commitment. In only one year we have: ✅ Initiated 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 activities to assist partner utilities getting a better grip on the challenges climate change poses on their operations. This may range from organizing datasets to start risk-based asset management, to developing hydrogeological assessments of potential wellfields or translating climate scenarios to local scale. ✅ In one year we have completed two successful 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼-𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 for investment proposals totalling 𝗘𝗨𝗥 𝟴𝗠. The number and quality of proposals submitted is testimony of the commitment and capability of our partner utilities to effectively identify and mobilize funds to address the impacts of climate change ✅ The programme and its partners have identified projects and committed funds to extend last-mile water connectivity in communities most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. We aim to reach an additional 𝟯𝟱𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳. The fund originates from the needs of utilities and has effectively addressed challenges that span over 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲. We have so far provided funding for a wide range of initiatives, including catchment restoration through Nature-based Solutions, rehabilitating damaged water distribution and sewerage infrastructure with a focus on "building back better," enhancing production capacity to improve water efficiency, upgrading monitoring equipment in existing wellfields, or supporting the development of locally produced, adaptable water treatment technologies. As we enter the new year, we remain committed to scaling up these efforts. Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited to build further on the success of completed projects and leveraging their outcomes to attract additional climate-resilient investments. We will remain strengthening strategic partnerships with both national and international stakeholders to sustain and expand our impact. 💧 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 VEI Malawi recently supported the waterboard in Malawi with unblocking two 5-meter pipes connecting old filter tanks to a chlorination tank. Transporting a large compressor would have cost hundreds of euros, risked damaging the pipes, and makes a higher risk working environment. Instead, the team locally rented a small car-tire compressor for just €8. After persistent work using air, water, and a drain rod, the pipes were successfully cleared. This low-cost, low risk and efficient solution allows the waterboard to restore the filtration system, improving the temporary water supply for the Dowa / Dzaleka area. 💡 New Article Publication: Accelerating Non-Revenue Water Reduction through Water Operator Partnerships. We are pleased to share our latest Paper: "The role of Water Operator Partnership in accelerating adoption of new working processes for non-revenue water reduction: a case study – WaterWorX WOP between Perumda Air Minum Tirta Moedal and VEI." published in the International Water Association Journal of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene for Development. This study highlights how the WaterWorX WOP between VEI and Perumda Air Minum Tirta Moedal (PDAM) Semarang, Indonesia, can drive innovation in reducing non-revenue water (NRW) in PDAM. In the paper, we explore the approach, results, and contributing factors that enable the successful adoption of new working processes. Thanks to the expertise from VEI and the eagerness to learn from PDAM, PDAM successfully reduced NRW levels from 39% to 26%. Key takeaways: * Non-revenue water levels can be reduced within a relatively short time frame (and with good return on investment) based on ‘action research’. * Successful WOPs benefit both the mentor and mentee utility. * ‘We learn from our mistakes but develop from our successes’: we have been inspired by other WOPs/utilities and hope this case study will inspire others! 𝗤-𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗘𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 VEI - through the WaterWorX programme - supports the national water utility in Uganda (National Water & Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to address challenges in borehole management. Globally, water extraction from boreholes can suffer filter clogging, pump selection or aquifer over-extraction. One of the most cost-efficient and sustainable interventions is to test borehole capacity regularly to define sustainable extraction volumes and to detect filter clogging. Reduced production capacities, as a result of filter clogging can easily be addressed with cleaning programs. Therefore, Q-Flow International from the Netherlands was engaged as they are a renowned supplier of borehole maintenance and cleaning services. An equipped cleaning truck was purchased and shipped to Uganda. In Uganda a maintenance team of NWSC was capacitated to execute borehole cleaning services nationally. This team will play a key role in boosting drinking water production from precious ground water resources, an essential step for climate adaptation. Q-Flow, as part of its social responsibility, donated repair and spare materials for the cleaning truck. Vitens Evides Waterbedrijf WML Waterbedrijf Groningen PWN WLN Brabant Water N.V.
