🚨📝 Just published! The FTAO has just released a background paper examining the critical role of smallholder farmers in global food systems and the risks posed by their exclusion from modern supply chains.   Smallholder farmers, often working on less than two hectares of land, collectively produce a staggering 46% of the world's food, including key commodities such as rice, coffee, cocoa, bananas and tea. Yet they manage only a third of the world's agricultural land and remain one of the most vulnerable population groups, with limited access to markets, financial constraints and increasing climate risks. 🌱👩🌾   As the European Commission prepares to unveil its New Vision for Agriculture and Food, it is essential that the needs of smallholder farmers in Europe and around the world are prioritised, ensuring not only its survival but also significantly enhancing its power in the supply chain.   Our paper identifies key areas of action: 1️⃣ Supporting equitable decision-making in supply chains and reducing intermediaries. 2️⃣ Ensuring fair prices for smallholder farmers' products. 3️⃣ Improving access to financial systems tailored to smallholders' needs. 4️⃣ Promoting inclusive trade policies, strengthening South-South, Triangular and North-South cooperation. 5️⃣ Investing in capacity building to enhance supply chain resilience, focusing on the most vulnerable.   The EU has a unique opportunity to lead by fostering sustainable partnerships, reducing trade barriers, and ensuring fair compensation to strengthen agricultural supply chains while supporting the millions of smallholders who sustain them. A Call for Humanity: Standing Against Extremism As the CEO of a social enterprise committed to fair trade, I’ve dedicated my work to creating structures that empower rather than exploit. But today, I feel compelled to address something that transcends any business model or mission statement: the rise of extremism and the dangerous undermining of human dignity in our society. In Germany and across the world, we are witnessing troubling signs that echo a dark chapter in our history. As extremism gains ground and the government hesitates to take a firm stand, we risk allowing history to repeat itself. This is a moment we cannot afford to ignore. We must not forget the lessons of the past. The dangerous ideologies that promote hatred, division, and dehumanization threaten not only the values we hold dear but the very fabric of society. Right-wing extremism and the exploitation that underpins it have no place in a world that values equality, justice, and respect for all. I urge everyone—whether in business, politics, or everyday life—to take a stand. Let us collectively reject extremism, exploitation, and hatred in all its forms. Our commitment to fair trade, ethical practices, and social responsibility goes hand in hand with the responsibility we all share to protect these values. History reminds us that silence and complacency allow hate to grow. Together, we must be louder than hate and stronger than fear. Let us build a future where every person is treated with dignity, where exploitation is not tolerated, and where extremism is condemned. Never forget.
