🦃 As #Thanksgiving day approaches, it’s worth reflecting on the systems that shape our food traditions. While it can be a meaningful time of gratitude, Thanksgiving is rooted in a history of colonization and harm to Indigenous communities—a legacy that persists in the inequities of our food systems today. 🍂 Consider this: 40% of the world’s food is wasted or lost annually, while millions face hunger. This waste also fuels 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. This week, let’s think critically about how we honor the food on our plates. Use your purchases to support equitable food systems, plan portions wisely, and get creative with leftovers. Small actions matter, but even better is rethinking the systems that brought us to where we are today. Learn more about what’s needed to reduce food loss and waste at scale: https://bit.ly/496auWG #SustainableFood #FoodSystems #FoodWaste #FoodLoss

Despite major headwinds, negotiators in Baku eked out a deal that is an important downpayment toward a safer, more equitable future. Though the agreement at least triples climate finance flowing to developing countries, the $300 billion goal is not enough. The poorest and most vulnerable nations are rightfully disappointed that wealthier countries didn’t put more money on the table when billions of people’s lives are at stake. This deal gets us off the starting block. Now the race is on to raise much more climate finance from a range of public and private sources, putting the whole financial system to work behind developing countries’ transitions. The year ahead offers numerous opportunities to raise the bar for climate finance, from development banks, the private sector, major economies and more — including through international taxes. We must seize all of them. Greater confidence that investments are coming will unlock more ambitious national climate commitments. This in turn sends a clear signal to investors to back the action we need. The hard work now begins to show a route to scaling up all sources of finance to deliver the $1.3 trillion developing countries need by 2035. Bio-energy production is taking up a lot of land that is urgently needed for the production of food or creating space for biodiversity. That's why just yesterday, Stientje van Veldhoven spoke at the European Parliament about forest conservation and sustainable land use, two critical issues for our planet's future. Did you know Europe’s tall forests have shrunk by 2.25M hectares in just 20 years? That’s half the size of Denmark! And nearly half of Europe’s harvested wood is burned for bioenergy. Burning wood creates more emissions than fossil fuels to produce electricity. But there’s hope! The EU’s Nature Restoration Law and better forest monitoring can reverse these trends. With tools like Global Forest Watch, we can track forest health in real time and take swift action. Check it here: https://lnkd.in/eUph5EQ The truth? Our land use is inefficient, exporting problems globally. Europe must adopt a comprehensive land-use strategy, one that balances food, energy, biodiversity, and climate goals. Together, we can protect our forests and ensure a sustainable future. 🌳 Thank you Fern NGO for pulling together this critical event. #ForestConservation #SustainableLandUse #ActNow #EU #EUDR #Forest #LandUse #EUParliament Sarah Carter
