WSK Medical focuses on developing AI solutions for real-time detection and classification of Head and Neck cancers during a routine endoscopic examination. Zeno AI is the first AI solution on the market for the real-time detection and classification of benign lesions and cancer in the Head and Neck area for Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT). Currently being used by Radboudumc, UMC Groningen, and more (in a research setting), Zeno AI provides ENT surgeons real-time assistance in detection and classification of benign or malignant lesions at an early stage during a routine endoscopic examination. Zeno AI aims to provide ENT clinicians and - in the future - first line clinicians - the expert knowledge of Head and Neck oncology surgeons in the form of a plug-and-play, vendor agnostic AI solution that works as simple as an overlay on the endoscopic screen. Zeno AI (pending MDR approval) offers ENT surgeons an AI solution that performs its analysis in real-time during a routine endoscopic examination of the head and neck. Our current version is focused on the larynx. Zeno AI is a closed (no internet connection nor data storage), plug-and-play system that works on any type of endoscope. Identifying and classifying certain types of throat tumours can be difficult for an ENT-surgeon. The difficulty to instantly classify throat tumours and lesions leads to a longer waiting time for treatment, which can reduce the survival outcome for patients. Furthermore, there is a high cost associated with diagnosing head and neck tumours, which can be ineffective. Using Zeno AI will give ENT surgeons a real-time AI analysis platform for early throat cancer detection and classification that can be utilised during an endoscopic examination. Our solution considerably reduces time to analyse complex lesions and assists in diagnosing throat cancer faster.

The last 20 years, the number of patients with #headandneckcancer has increased with 34% in the Netherlands. Oncological care for #headandneckcancer patients is centralized in certified head and neck oncology centres, necessitating a rigorous follow-up schedule. In 2022, this resulted in around 30.000 visits by 11.000 patients in the Netherlands. This creates challenges for head and neck oncologists to maintain the current levels of oncological care, stressing the need to detect cancer without delay and identifying recurrences early during patient follow-ups. The goal of the recent approved grant that UMCG and WSK Medical received from KWF Kankerbestrijding and Health~Holland, is to introduce Zeno AI into local hospitals to assist #ent clinicians with telemedicine-based follow-ups. This innovative approach has the potential to offer a sustainable alternative for early #cancer detection and modernize follow-up strategies, potentially easing the burden on patients. The research will focus initially on #laryngeal carcinoma, testing and refining this follow-up strategy to gather evidence supporting high-quality care closer to patients' homes. At the same time, it will help manage care for newly diagnosed #headandneckcancer patients, in preparation for the anticipated rise in incidence. While geographical differences exist, travel distances often present barriers to proper surveillance, as visiting a head and neck centre requires significant time, energy, and financial resources from both patients and caregivers.
