Wageningen Science Shop project: Teaching module on nitrogen 🌱 After a year of hard work, it was time on November 4th for the final meeting of the Wageningen Science Shop project ‘Nitrogen teaching module’. The afternoon was filled with interesting results. It is truly a project that the participants look back on with pride and fond memories. For the teaching module itself, the last finishing touches are still being put in place but will then be publicly available. Monique Könings, client of the project and founder of Natuuropleiding was looking for knowledge to develop a teaching module on nitrogen, a vague concept for many. Natuuropleiding is an organisation for adults who are interested and want to know more about nature. Its team of teachers organises interactive, experience-based lessons about nature-related topics. The excess of nitrogen in Dutch nature is a big problem, but what exactly is nitrogen? And why is excess nitrogen so bad for nature? With those questions, Könings came to talk with nitrogen expert and ecologist Wieger Wamelink, who referred her to the Wageningen Science Shop. 🤝 The project then kicked into gear. A group of students participating in the course Academic Consultancy Training (ACT), part of many Master studies at Wageningen University, first started the project under the guidance of ecologist Lian Grabijn and prepared an advisory report for a teaching module. Read more about their project in Resource: https://lnkd.in/e9cn69Cz After the ACT project, master students Lisa Warum and Tessa Stroeken started their internships with Grabijn to further develop the project. Stroeken talks about the development and pilot of the teaching module at the final meeting. The learning module eventually includes one day of theory coupled with activities. Activities include building molecules, “forest bathing”, the food web game and the nitrogen cycle puzzle. 🧠 The teaching module is now very clear and applicable. Könings says she will probably use it in a master year of Natuuropleiding. The module is also intended to be useful for schools and nature- and education-related organisations. At the end of the meeting, all visitors were asked to participate in one of the teaching module activities: the nitrogen cycle puzzle, a first taste of the result. The afternoon ended with drinks and was marked by pride, openness and warmth for a successful project.
