Inspiring the next space generations!

Over ons

YPSat | Young Professionals Satellite 🛰️ Having only recently taken on new posts at ESA, approximately 65 Young Professionals from various ESA establishments, Directorates and disciplines decided to join forces to form the ESA Young Professionals Satellite team. Working together on a voluntary basis, the challenge the team has elected to take on is to design, build and fly hardware for space. The ESA Young Professionals Satellite (ESA YPSat) is a payload being developed for the inaugural flight of Ariane 6 and will provide ESA’s first images of flight’s key phases. The spacecraft will remain attached to the launcher’s upper stage throughout the mission up until destructive re-entry.

  • What better way to kick off 2025 than with the ultimate 2️⃣for1️⃣ space deal?  YPSat-2: One team, one mission, two payloads! 🚀    That’s right, the Young Professional Satellite is back with a new team for a new mission carrying 2️⃣ payloads.   🔬 AIM (Angiology in Microgravity):   What happens to blood flow and the heart in space? AIM will investigate how space conditions influence blood flow and cardiovascular health. Findings aim to enhance astronaut safety in space but also revolutionise heart treatments right here on Earth 🌍 - a mission with double the benefits!     🧬 LEOrigin (Illuminating Life’s Origins):  Ever wondered how life might have begun? LEOrigin will recreate the conditions of asteroids and comets by transforming simple molecules into life's building blocks. Results could provide insights into the origins of life — unlocking secrets of the emergence of life on the Earth, the early Solar System ☀️, the Martian surface🪐 and beyond!    🚧 Our mission is currently under development, in the Critical Design Phase, working hard to bring this mission to life!    📢 Stay tuned for updates and join us on this exciting journey! - The YPSat-2 Team #YPSat2 #SpaceScience #AIM #LEOrigin #SpaceExploration #ESA #YoungProfessionals

📡 Meet one of the antennas behind the success of YPSAT Launched onboard the maiden flight of #Ariane6, the YPSat mission owes its success to a network of ground stations, big and small, dispersed around the globe. Among these stations is one very special antenna located at the European Space Security and Education Centre (#ESEC), in Redu, Belgium. Normally, this antenna is solely dedicated to the centre's programme, #Proba, which aims at demonstrating and validating new technologies and concepts in orbit.  "We were happy to offer one of Proba's antennas to YPSat for the duration of their short mission. We had to reconfigure our antenna to match their requirements, for example the radio frequency. During the launch and in the hours following it, we acquired the mission's data and shared it with the team located at #ESOC Main Control Room", says René Wittmann, Proba Spacecraft Operation Manager. The SmallSat Control Centre located at ESEC/Redu complements ESA’s main Mission Control Centre located at #ESOC by operating small satellites (typically up to 1m3) and CubeSats. The site of Redu also hosts one station belonging to ESA’s ground station network, #ESTRACK. Set to be launched in 2024, the #Proba3 mission, composed of two spacecrafts, will demonstrate new technologies for satellite formation-flying. It will be operated from ESEC.

It's been two weeks since the historical inaugural flight of the Ariane 6, and this just in - we just got the video from our friends at YPSAT of our CubeSats being deployed! 🚀   Take a look as the Exolaunch deployer first releases 3Cat-4, then ISTSat-1 into orbit. Both of these CubeSats are built by European university students as a part of ESA Education's Fly Your Satellite! programme.   🛰️ Built by students at the Instituto Superior Técnico, ISTSat-1 will test new technology for tracking aircraft, using key subsystems developed by the team.   🛰️ 3Cat-4 was developed by students at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Spain. It carries three experiments to measure important climate variables.   Both CubeSats have since received beacons and the teams are working to assess how to proceed. We hope to provide an update on mission statuses soon!   Are we the only ones who get a little Star Trek feeling of seeing these being deployed into orbit? 🌌🛰️   Thanks YPSAT for capturing this amazing footage! We can't wait to see more of your results in the next weeks. 👨🚀 #ISTSat1 #3Cat4 #FlyYourSatellite #ESAEducation #Ariane6

We were thrilled to witness the inaugural launch of the new European launcher Ariane 6! This milestone opens new capabilities for European access to space, with the powerful rocket featuring a flexible design that can launch missions from Low-Earth Orbit and farther out into deep space. Onboard Ariane 6 was the Young Professional Satellite – YPSAT, which captured these breathtaking photos from orbit, where the other payloads can be seen alongside stunning views of the Earth. At OHB Hellas, we are especially proud of Alexis Chatzistylianos, one of our engineers, who contributed to YPSAT’s onboard software and data handling during his time at the European Space Agency - ESA. Congratulations to the entire YPSAT team and all the people involved behind this remarkable achievement! #Ariane6 #YPSAT #ESA

We have our pictures from Orbit! 🚀 The YPSAT, our Young Professional Satellite made by our ESA Young Professionals, launched aboard the #Ariane6 last night, and we are excited to share the pictures from orbit, alongside the video of the fairing separation of the Ariane 6 🛰️ The #YPSAT mission has finished with taking breathtaking pictures of our blue planet from above, which was only made possible by the unique Wake-Up System created by the young professionals. With teams actively participating in the launch in the Mission Control Room at ESA #ESOC and decoding in the labs of ESA #ESTEC, the pictures are truly out of this world! 🌌✨ Not only did YPSAT record the main milestones of the #Ariane6 maiden flight, thanks to the @OSCAR-QUBE, the mission also succeeded in its scientific goal, capturing the earth's magnetic field throughout the atmosphere. We want to give a huge thank you to our other partners Scanway, EnduroSat, AMSAT-EA, and the many ground stations that supported us through the night 🕺 #ESA #SpaceTeamEurope #Ariane6 #YPSAT

YGT in ESA Model-Based Management System | Project lead of the ESA Young Professional Satellite

It's been 10 days since we launched YPSat on the Ariane 6's maiden flight! 🚀🛰️ The YPSat mission was an amazing succes, capturing breathtaking events during launch, and capturing scientific data on Earth's magnetic field, thanks to our collaboration with the OSCAR (Optical Sensors based on CARbon materials) team from Hasselt University. The success of this mission reflects the dedication and passion of Young Professionals in the Space industry, taking initiative to launch their own projects and missions! Reflecting on the past year, here are some key takeaways from leading the YPSat project through its final AIT stages and launch: 🛰 Responsible engineers: At SpaceX, engineers are known as RE's - responsible engineers who blend domain expertise with a systems engineering mindset. ➡ The success of a project hinges on having RE's who extend their focus beyond individual subsystems to ensure seamless integration across teams. 🛰 Experience vs. Testing: While experience is invaluable, nothing beats exhaustive testing! ➡ Thorough testing provides confidence and validation, allowing even those with limited experience to ensure system performance. 🛰 Seek help from others: Embracing feedback and seeking help from others is a crucial part of the learning process. Reviews and critiques from a diverse group of experts often reveal insights and perspectives that may have been overlooked, leading to smarter decisions and better outcomes. ❗ Keep in mind, the purpose of reviews are for the reviewee, not to entertain the crowd of reviewers. ❗ The best answer to a critical comment is “Thank you!” 💡 Follow YPSAT and stay tuned for more post-launch content and analysis! Here's to many more missions, inspiring future generations! 🌟👩🚀
