🌳 Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the first day of the Anatomy of Timber/Building Forum at TU Delft, hosted by the BK-Wood Group. A huge thank you to the organizers for assembling such an impressive range of speakers who highlighted critical advancements in the timber industry. Key takeaways that resonated with me: 🔧 Mario Rinke discussed the importance of designing for change by learning from historical processes. Instead of demolition, we should embrace a strategic hierarchy, guided by Steward Brand's Shearing Layers model. Truly radical sustainability demands adaptable solutions beyond bespoke design. ⚠️ The debate on toxic glue in laminated timber sparked thought-provoking discussions. While necessary for strength and longevity, it remains the largest carbon component. Interesting insights emerged on material purity: Germany avoids treating timber and opts for thicker timber members, as a charred wood layer still maintains structural integrity. 💧 Moisture management is key! Solutions such as sacrificial wood layers and relieving grooves in wet wood can help prevent splitting and enhance durability. 🌲 American Tulipwood - a fast-growing, high strength-to-weight ratio timber - shows great potential for CLT. Its slender structure and varied tones make it not only functional but also aesthetically unique. 🏡 The global challenge: With population growth concentrated in the Global South, how can we promote locally grown timber solutions for housing in these regions? 🌍 I’m happy to know about XLAM South Africa offering CLT solutions in South Africa. 🐜 Fun fact: Termites can't walk upside down, offering an intriguing avenue for design solutions! These discussions and case studies reminded me that our challenge is to leverage our design expertise to create solutions that are not only eco-friendly but also aesthetically compelling. By aligning sustainability with thoughtful, innovative design, we can shape a future where beauty and responsibility coexist. A heartfelt thank you to all the inspiring speakers, whose names are listed here: https://lnkd.in/dbrq-jyU #TimberConstruction #Sustainability #CircularDesign #InnovationInArchitecture #CLT #WoodIndustry
