This video showcases a live demonstration from our latest EV Fire Workshop in Mafra, Brazil. With over 250 industry professionals in attendance, we successfully tested the application of the Fire Isolator concept/products on lithium-ion battery fires and the effectiveness of the Fire Isolator Concept in fighting EV car fires (without spraying 20,000 gallons of water on the car). Regarding the number of incidents, there are more e-bikes and e-scooter fires with the battery in thermal runaway, than cars. However, the risks of these e-bike/e-scooter fires are also very high. These relatively small lithium-ion batteries have burned out entire houses and commercial buildings. For this reason, it is also advisable to look beyond extinguishing with water alone for these types of fires. Having a customized blanket available that at least keeps the fire under the blanket can then be crucial to the result and collateral damage. Compared to a focused beam of water, a fine water mist offers exponentially greater heat absorption—making it one of the most effective firefighting tools to use alongside our Fire Isolator EV fire blanket. The secret lies in its tiny droplets, which create a larger surface area to cool hot surfaces. In the case of an EV car fire with the battery in thermal runaway, the goal is not to extinguish the battery/stop the thermal runaway (that is built in deep inside the car) but to reduce the temperature, kick down the toxic vapor coming off the vehicle and by wetting the blanket, we reduce the leakage of the potassium nitrate aerosol cloud that we create under the blanket to kick down the flames. Looking back to 2024, we have a lot of things to be thankful for at Fire Isolator. Stormy growth has continued since its inception 3 years ago, and it has taken us and Fire Isolator products almost all over the world. With growth came new colleagues, insights, new business partners, compliments but also critical comments that we have incorporated into product improvements. We will continue on our chosen path into 2025 and that path has been shaped by quality products, an honest and pragmatic story of EV firefighting, and human relations. Further, we will continue to incorporate new insights into our story and develop new, tested and certified products as needed. As many of you already know, Fire Isolator will continue as a private limited company as of Jan. 1, 2025. Here are already the first images of a very successful live test and demonstration in Brazil of our full Fire Isolator concept in front of an audience of 250 consisting of car manufacturers, insurers, fire departments, building managers, and governments. Once in thermal runaway, the lithium-ion NMC battery used in the car for this test reacted aggressively with large jet flames and high temperatures. Our blanket held perfectly after which we used our water mist lance to cool the car and minimize the toxic gases. Simultaneously, the Fire Isolator aerosol units were deployed by throwing them under the blanket, close to the battery, which immediately went to work. After the deployment of 2 aerosol units, the thermal runaway had stopped to the extent that there was control. All in all, this live demonstration was a resounding success and proof that the deployment of the different components of the Fire Isolator concept together brings the control so necessary in EV fires. We will extensively report this demonstration in Brazil as soon as possible and publish it on our website. Now this is very useful research; what does water do on an EV fire, how should water be applied and what effects can be expected? We like the fact that the term 'suppress' is used here, which is more applicable than 'extinguish'. This is also the mindset change that is often still needed and why these kinds of EV fires often make the news; people think they can 'just extinguish' the battery with a lot of water. A battery that is deeply built into the car cannot be extinguished with a fire hose alone, let alone stop the thermal runaway. Not to mention the thousands of liters of contaminated water running straight into the ground. The rest of the car can be extinguished with the fire hose but our experience has been best with water mist (with fixed systems or manually operated water mist devices under or next to the car; especially in combination with our blanket. Both do not stop the thermal runaway but cool very well and knock down the toxic fumes. This is now the way for more and more fire departments. #ElectricVehicle fires resulting from thermal runaway propagation pose many challenges for first responders to control the fire and successfully manage the incident. Additionally, the risk of reignition poses challenges for secondary responders responsible for removing the vehicle from the fireground. In the latest series of experiments for the Fire Safety of Batteries and Electric Vehicles research project, FSRI researchers aim to understand what water suppression strategies firefighters can use to mitigate these hazards. Findings from this experiment phase will contribute to future tactical considerations and training resources to help enable the fire service to conduct safe and effective size-up and suppression strategies. Today marked the first day of our two-week Fire 🔥 Isolator tour across Latin America, with visits planned in Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil. We kicked off in Santiago with our dealer, EV Fire Chile. What a fantastic day! I had the privilege of visiting the second oldest regiment in Chile. They are a shining example for other regiments 👨🚒and are highly interested in Fire Isolator’s approach to combating EV fires in all types of electric vehicles and equipment with lithium batteries. We discussed a market that is still hesitant but faces big risks in parkings/ industry/ vessels/ mines/.. , again highlighting the urgent need for a comprehensive plan. Later, we had other meetings with warm contacts in the fire service industry, who are interested in combining our blanket, aerosol, and water mist products with their PPE. The approach to EV fires requires thorough explanation and (finally) good legislation. In each country. That is why the Fire Isolator team is out there to support their dealers—even on location at 11,000 km away!
