A new series of high-strength austenitic stainless steels have been developed specifically for cast products, offering improved properties over traditional options like 6Mo grades. ⚒️ Casting allows the production of detailed, complex components with reduced labour, lead times, and costs compared to forging. ⚒️ The stainless steel casting industry is expected to grow at an annual rate of over 4% by 2032, driven by demand from aerospace, energy, automotive, and defense sectors. ⚒️ Historically, most alloys used for castings were adapted from wrought grades, which posed challenges in performance and manufacturability. Government and industry representatives met for the International Nickel Study Group meetings, during which the Group reviewed its forecasts for nickel production and use for 2024. This article gives a brief overview of recent developments based on the data finalised at the meetings. Keypoints include: 👉 In 2024, world primary nickel production is forecast to rise by +5.9% after increasing by +17.2% in 2022 and by +9.7% in 2023. 👉 In 2024, usage is forecast to increase by +7.9%, to reach 3.445Mt. All world regions are expected to expand, with China recording the biggest increase in absolute volume. 👉 A number of minerals and metals have been identified as critical or strategic for the energy transition, and different countries have been developing their own initiatives with regard to those minerals and metals, including nickel.
