Meet Baylee Knutson, one of our talented Associate Breeders at Syngenta Flowers, who specializes in vinca, calibrachoa, and petunia breeding! She was recently featured in Greenhouse Grower's "Next Generation of Breeders in Floriculture" article for how her background in molecular genetics influences her breeding techniques. "As a breeder, I'm interested in bringing statistics and genetic tools to horticultural plant breeding and taking our breeding practices to the next level," says Knutson. "Our trialing prioritizes experimental design to produce reliable and reproducible results, giving confidence in the quality of our varieties. We are adopting genetic resources, and by using genomic information, we will be more efficient in breeding and can focus on complex traits that matter to growers and consumers, such as disease resistance and flower shelf life." In the past several years, disease resistance breeding has become more important than ever before, leading to the creation of Syngenta Flowers’ XDR (eXtreme Disease Resistance) products. Baylee dedicates a lot of time to breeding our XDR vinca series, Cora XDR, Cora Cascade XDR, and Nirvana XDR to ensure new varieties can stand up to the pressure of aerial Phytopthora. Because of thorough breeding work like Baylee’s, we are proud to have the leading disease resistant vinca on the market.
