New Zealand kelp for climate tour complete!🌊 🌱Hatch Innovation Services has concluded an amazingly productive exploration of New Zealand seaweed farming, aquaculture and blue carbon restoration projects. Some of the key insights we observed: 🔹From a policy perspective, we need greater alignment and support for seaweed farming and restoration. 🔹Biodiversity and nature restoration should play a bigger part in any discussion of credits. 🔹Aquaculture players are keen on blue carbon topics and seaweed farming, but revenue and profit potential are the main focus. …and there’s so much more to discuss! Connect with us to dive deeper into these exciting developments. Peter Green, Hatch Innovation Services, Hatch Blue.

🌊 Aquaculture Intelligence: Tackling the Sea Lice Challenge in Salmon Farming In this month’s update, we’re focusing on sea lice management—a critical issue as salmon farmers worldwide face pressure to balance environmental sustainability, fish health, and economic viability. 🌊This persistent challenge has driven the development of innovative solutions & strategies, from non-medical treatments to preventive solutions like submersible farms, lice skirts, and AI-driven monitoring. Our project Analyst, Inken Tiedemann, shares insights on the latest innovations: 🧊 Non-Medical Treatments: driven by environmental concerns and rising resistance in lice, the industry has moved toward thermal, mechanical, and freshwater delousing solutions to avoid medicinal reliance—though these methods bring their welfare considerations. 🛡️ Preventive strategies: new farming technologies such as (semi-) closed containment systems, submersible or offshore farms, as well as lice skirts, electromagnetic fences or bubble curtains 📈Digitalisation: camera technologies and AI-based decision-making support for automatically monitoring lice levels and fish health, keeping handling stress to a minimum. At Hatch Innovation Services, we’re committed to advancing knowledge and supporting sustainable aquaculture practices. Want to learn more? Connect with us to explore the latest topics in new farming systems and their technologies, as well as insights into sea lice solutions and see how our insights can together help shape the future of sustainable aquaculture 🌍. In this month's Aquaculture Intelligence with The Fish Site, we talked about Blue Carbon! From our ongoing work in the blue carbon space, we are encountering several key challenges that have persisted over the years. Key Challenges: 💸 Blue Carbon Credits: the cost of blue carbon credits not fully covering restoration efforts, 📉 Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV): uncertainty remains for seaweed and seagrass projects. 🌿 Restoration Success Rates: low success rates in certain ecosystems hinder progress. Opportunities for Innovation: 🔬 Advanced Technologies: utilize sophisticated hyperspectral imaging and improved planting techniques. 🌊 Integration with Community Activities: co-locate blue carbon projects with aquaculture and ecotourism. Addressing these challenges while capitalizing on opportunities for innovation and support is essential for unlocking the full potential of blue carbon initiatives. Written by our project manager - Peter Green. And supported by our senior editor Rob Fletcher (And....do connect with Peter Green in New Zealand in October for the Kelp Climate Tour)
