EASTER PUZZLE
Here is an Easter puzzle that is especially well suited for petrophysicists – but also suitable for children of all ages. I have an answer to this Easter puzzle, but it is more of a hypothesis than a definitive answer. Anyone who comes up with an answer similar to mine – or with a better hypothesis – will receive honorable mention and maybe a small gift in the mail (if the postage isn't too high 😊).
The following observations can be made about regular paper – it:
· is quite stiff when dry
· becomes softer when moistened with water
· does not become softer when moistened with oil (e.g. olive oil)
How can all these three observations be simultaneously explained?
EXTRA PUZZLE
If you feel extra brave, you can also try to answer this bonus question:
Where is most water lifted with a thin glass tube?
A. On the inside
B. On the outside
You are also encouraged to explain why A or B is the correct answer.
