Norge har i dag en bransjeforening for datasenterindustrien som genuint ønsker å bidra positivt inn i de problemstillingen man ser innenfor nett og energi i Norge. Datasentre har blant annet infrastruktur i form av batteripakker og reservestrømsaggregater som kan nyttiggjøres til frekvensregulering og til å ta ned «peak»’ene i kraftnettet - og dermed redusere behovet for nettutbygging. Godt samarbeid her kan altså utløse store gevinster. Men for å få på plass mekanismer må man forstå hverandres muligheter og utfordringer - og det igjen forutsetter god dialog. Slik som her. Invest In Norway had the pleasure of joining the #GermanBiocharForum 2024 in Berlin to learn about visions, policies, and methodologies for integrating BCR into national and corporate strategies. The EU, USA, and China have already established a Biochar industry, which will contribute substantially to carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Norway, with its large reserves of biomass feedstock, could play a significant role and contribute to Biochar carbon removal (BCR).   While it is imperative to phase out fossil fuels and drastically reduce emissions as fast as possible, the only way to reach our climate goals is through additional carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from the atmosphere. Biochar carbon removal (BCR) is a CDR technology that offers several distinguished advantages: it is readily available and technologically mature (TRL 8-9), it comes with an established and reliable measuring, reporting, and verification (MRV) system, and biochar is a valuable product with a multitude of material applications. For two and a half days in Seoul and Pohang, representatives from the Nordic battery ecosystem will be meeting with Korean battery industry players. In Seoul today, we are meeting the Korean battery association, and SNE Research, Hanwha Aerospace and SungEel HiTech will share their insights. The Chairman of the Norwegian Data Center Industry association - or, as Bjorn Ronning puts it, its «cheerleader» - Halvor Bjerke on the status of the industry as well as the role of data centers and AI in the grid going forward. The grid will increasingly be digitalized and efficient, the data centers will co-localize with new energy production and they will deliver flexibility services to the grid.

«Samlokalisering av datasentre og solindustrien er interessant for oss» ifølge Elvia. Videre er datasentrene i dag flinke til å utnytte «tilknytning på vilkår», men Elvia etterlyser flere datasentre inn i testing av markedsfleksibilitet. Fra olje og gass til datasenterindustrien: Siri Eidet og Vinje Industri AS bygger samfunnskritisk infrastuktur - de kommer opprinnelig fra olje og gass men jobber nå også stadig mer med datasenterindustrien. i 2017 begynte de å jobbe med Bulk Infrastructure Group AS som etablerte datasenter utenfor Kristiansand. Siden har de bygget kompetanse sten på sten. «Datasenterindustrien er en foroverlent næring i vekst, og vi er imponert over bærekraftsarbeidet hos de store selskapene…. Flexibility in the energy markets is the topic for the Norwegian Data Center Industry ‘s last members meeting of the year. The Norwegian TSO Statnett SF and the largest DSO Elvia are participating in this dialogue today to ensure win-win, i.e. enabling data centers to supply grid services in order to decrease the need for new grid infrastructure. The data center industry is growing in Norway. It is more than «just» data centers, there is a large and growing supply chain of national, regional and international companies with the potential to create additional value. Flexibility and reuse of heat are two extremely important areas that the industry is focusing on - areas that can increase the sustainability of the industry while also increasing value creation.
