"If I dwelled on the value of this project, I wouldn't sleep at night." The entire JUICE operation cost a neat sum of 1.6 billion euros, roughly 18.677 billion Norwegian kroner. Enough to buy about eight brand-new Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Or approximately 19,000 well-equipped Teslas. In the JUICE project, Martin was responsible for assembling the final product and conducting the extremely rigorous testing phase. One of JUICE's overarching goals is to assess the habitability – the ability of a planet to support life – of these icy worlds. By studying their chemical and physical conditions, JUICE aims to expand our understanding of the potential for life beyond Earth. For KONGSBERG, the JUICE project began in 2016. In 2023, the parts were transported to Germany for assembly on the finished satellite, before being sent across the Atlantic to French Guiana. During the second step of humankind’s first-ever lunar-Earth flyby, ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) captured these stunning views of Earth and Moon. This successful flyby of Earth redirected Juice’s path through space to put it on course for a flyby of Venus in August 2025. “Not rocket science” The student organisation USN Horizon from the University of South-Eastern Norway has completed its debut participation in the European Rocketry Challange in Portugal. Sponsored by our business area Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, they have worked tirelessly on their very first project, “Not Rocket Science.” Along the way, they encountered both logistical and technical challenges, yet achieved impressive results and gained invaluable experience. It all started with a question: “How hard can it be?” That question took hold, the idea became reality, and USN Horizon was established. As a newly formed student organisation, they set themselves an ambitious goal with the 2024 project “Not Rocket Science,” aiming to launch a 3.5-metre, self-built rocket at this year’s EuRoC in Portugal. Could these drones be spies seeking information? Or could they be attempts by hostile nations to create confusion and fear? Drones are often used by actors with less innocent intentions than curious tourists. Nearly all commercial drones are equipped with cameras capable of recording high-quality videos. Since the pilot can fly relatively unnoticed near buildings and installations, drones are well-suited for mapping and gathering information. This could include entrances to buildings, security systems, or vulnerable points, such as those related to electricity or fuel supplies. On both sides of the Russia-Ukraine war, modified commercial and specialized drones are mass-produced in makeshift factories. The availability of such drones means we have good reason to secure critical infrastructure here in Norway. Our critical infrastructure renders us vulnerable. Can technology protect us? Delivered its 1,000th ship design! The IWS Seawalker, a futuristic windfarm service operation vessel, marks a major milestone for our business area Kongsberg Maritime’s Ship Design team. The design team has been delivering innovative vessel designs and integrated solutions for more than 50 years, and they continue to offer pioneering vessels across a range of global markets. IWS Fleet’s investment in the Skywalker Class vessels demonstrates a firm focus on using future-oriented technology in an exciting and growing market. As the Captain and crew of the IWS Seawalker prepare to start serving the rapidly growing offshore wind farms in the North Sea. Just like the very first UT vessels of the 1970s, this latest advanced design is a pioneer of its day, setting high standards for safe, efficient, and innovative operations in the global offshore energy industry. The UT design range has also developed to include other ship types including oceanographic research, coastal protection and most recently a range of vessels designed specifically for operating in offshore wind farms. Historic infrastructure inspection on Lake Superior Demonstrating the ability of advanced hydroacoustics to illuminate the world beneath the waves with a detailed, efficient, and comprehensive inspection of the historic Lower Harbor Ore Dock at Marquette on Lake Superior. The iconic structure, a pivotal point for the transportation of iron ore from Michigan mines right across the Great Lakes region, dates back to the late 19th century. KONGSBERG's 21st century multibeam sonar and imaging technology showed just how well it had withstood the test of time, harsh weather, and a busy history of vessel operations. Our business area Kongsberg Discovery used two of its sonars, the M3 Sonar HF multibeam sonar and the 1171 Hi-Res Scanning singlebeam sonar, to scan the vertical wall structure. SoundTiles, an IQUA Robotics software, was used to process the multibeam data for rapid mosaicking. The high resolution 1171 single-beam sonar was then deployed to create a powerful real time visualization of the walls, diving into detail across the timber pole piles and concrete foundations for “incredible imaging”.
