Who would imagine that a 75MW Floating Offshore Wind (FOW) project 100km off the coast of Hammerfest in Northern Norway would draw attention on a seminar hosted by the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo - ノルウェー大使館? Japan has subscribed to the Paris climate goals and will, due to its geographical limitations, be dependent on large developments of FOW to manage their energy transition away from coal and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). When I was in Tokyo in December 2023, the Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre, on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Energy and Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries signed a memorandum setting out the direction for a Japan-Norway collaboration on FOW technologies. The GoliatVIND project is one of few mature full scale FOW projects currently being developed globally with Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) sizes of more than 15MW, which will be necessary to drive down the cost of electricity from FOW and make this technology relevant in the energy mix. The two Japanese companies Kansai Electric Power Co., Ltd and ENEOS Renewable Energy Corporation are partners in the project together with Odfjell Oceanwind and Source Galileo Norge. On top of that, the Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. is a large shareholder in Odfjell Oceanwind who delivers the Deepsea Star technology to the project. Despite challenging times in offshore wind these days it is refreshing to see how the Japan-Norway partnership is flourishing on the FOW agenda! The strong Japanese culture of long term strategic planning and industrial thinking is a great advantage when taking on a complex and challenging task such as making FOW relevant on a global scale. #DeepseaStar #GoliatVIND
