Our work is ever more relevant. Columbia | SIPA, Sustainable Investing Research Initiative (SIRI) brought together during UNGA week a very able and impressive group of academics, policy makers, philanthropists and business leaders at Columbia University. Our focus was blended finance, and we at Origination are delighted to be a knowledge partner in this very meaningful and important endeavour. We discussed India in particular- and how we can best bring fit-for-purpose capital in support of the Global South. There are at least three reasons to be supportive of and a bit optimistic about this work going forward: First, when listening to Johan Rockström and the Stockholm Resilience Centre's recent TED talk, we all see that our need to address climate change is more urgent than ever. How to finance the transition is a critical question - in particular in hard to abate sectors, and in the global south - but it stretches far beyond that, as: Second, Mario Draghi, former prime minister of Italy, recently presented a report on the Future of European Competitiveness. The report points out Europe´s pressing need to refocus its collective innovation gap with the US and China. The report further underscores why a plan for decarbonization and competitiveness is necessary, and advocates swift action in increasing security and reducing dependencies. The financing required for the EU is massive, per page 59 of the report. It’s very encouraging to see that leaders already in our SIRI community are leading from the front in Europe and the US. In the US, we see pioneering leaders like Jim Sørensen spearheading a movement on blended finance that can help with home ownership and much else domestically. In Europe we have seen how the very capable leadership of Harald Mix and Henrik Henriksson was able to find a blended finance formula of euro 6.5 billion for Stegra (formerly H2 Green Steel). Blended finance is essential to support the Global South, but it also seems to be essential when financing critical infrastructure and other investments in Europe and the US. It will be very exciting to work on the program in coming years. Third, a community of policy makers, academics, philanthropists and business leaders is emerging. I believe we all felt a sense of excitement when meeting and listening to the interventions of leaders from different backgrounds yet with a common interest. I especially commend Caroline Flammer, who is leading our work and whose team is helping to drive cutting-edge research, influence practice and build a community that will sustain these efforts for a long time. In short, a very strong community is emerging and our agenda is more relevant than ever before. We all share the conviction that time is of the essence. It will be very rewarding to see the blended finance mission move forward and encourage excellent research and practice that will make a real difference. #GoodGrowth #StrongerTogether #BlendedFinance #Draghireport #ImpactInvesting

We are thrilled to share that Origination recently visited FLAME University, a pioneer in liberal education in India. It was an honor to speak with their talented students and esteemed faculty about the vital role of Origination in Achieving Good Growth—a critical component of thriving societies, locally and globally. During our visit, we emphasized that reinventing growth is imperative. Growth should benefit many rather than a few, align with nature and deliver both short-term and long-term value. This resonates deeply with Flame University's mission to equip students to tackle global challenges from multiple perspectives as well as with the University's commitment to nurturing the students to become catalysts for international cooperation and human development in an evolving global landscape. Our discussion centered on: - The Principles of Origination: Driving a new Renaissance by reimagining governance, consumption and collaboration. - The New Opportunity Space: Navigating transitions in energy, capital, wealth, technology and frontier markets to unlock unparalleled opportunities for the next generations. - Actionable Insights: How students can contribute to this transformative journey through curiosity, collaboration and innovation. We see immense potential in India's strides towards renewable energy, sustainable development and technological advancements. With businesses and leaders like those at Flame University, the future holds promising opportunities for inclusive and sustainable growth. A heartfelt thank you to Vice Chancellor Dr Dishan Kamdar, Pro Vice Chancellor M.A. Venkataramanan, Registrar Dr Virender Sharma, Asst Dean Professor Dr. Bharat Damani, Associate Director Padmanava Das, and Flame University for their warm welcome and insightful collaboration. Most importantly, we extend our gratitude to the students for their vibrant discussions and great engagement in Originating Good Growth. Your ideas and energy are the fuel for the next generation of change-makers. FINANCING THE ENERGY TRANSITION This week it is 27 years since Lord Browne gave his landmark climate change speech at Stanford University, which opened the world to a new world view: one day we need to go beyond fossil fuels. Much has been learned and today we see with clarity that the energy transition is more urgent than ever. It is seen as the larger capital allocation event since the end of WW2 and we need technologies like carbon capture, green hydrogen, green building materials, EV batteries, and more to go to scale – now. Origination brought this week together exceptionally resourceful next generation investors, entrepreneurs, and new venture leaders from Fortune 500 companies. Just as on that warm May day at Stanford 27 years we see with clarity: 1) Every nation must take responsibility for its actions and leverage its unique strengths to drive the energy transition forward. Setting Net Zero targets is easy (>80% of the world’s emissions are covered by such targets), but the pace of execution is lagging 2) Every country has a role to play in advancing renewable resources, innovative technology solutions, or policy frameworks conducive to sustainable development. Whether IRA in the US, the EU Green deal, or India’s 2070 vision, governments need to work with private sector to unlock $3-5tn USD per year in capital allocation. 3) Financing the energy transition is still a challenge. There is a gap today in the way governments have funded the oil industry, medicine R&D, and other 20th century drivers of human prosperity. Private investors will not invest in projects that lose money and government funding is not sufficient. Hybrid finance, blended finance, philanthropy, government investments, incentives, and private capital all have a key role to play. Our mission at Origination is to build a community of originators able and willing to invest in service of the next seven generations. We are grateful to Lord Browne for sharing his analysis and wisdom with us and to all who brought their insights to the table. Thank you. We are stronger together. #energytransition #climatefinance #sustainability #netzero #sdg #nextgen #Origination
