What is green fishing? 🍃🎣 Green fishing is all about making the fishery fleet more sustainable. It involves tackling the challenges of overfishing, reducing the environmental impact of fishing activities, and promoting the use of eco-friendly gear and methods. This approach prioritizes the health of marine ecosystems, ensuring that fishing practices do not harm other marine life or the habitat they depend on.🐙🐟 📸AI generated image (DALL E 3) #RControl #sustainability #sustainablefishing #AI #deeplearning #innovation

How are AI models assessed during training? 🤖 When a model is trained on data through machine learning, it is usually also tested on a small proportion of the training data, which is called the "validation dataset". After each iteration of the training dataset, it will test its performance on the validation dataset, giving us a view of how good the model performs on new, unseen data. 📊 Two performance metrics are used for this, "Precision" and "Recall". Precision says how much of the predicted positive instances are actually correct. Recall, on the other hand, measures the models ability to find all positive cases within the dataset. ⚖ Both are important, as they balance each other out. Balancing precision and recall is crucial for creating an effective and reliable AI model. By monitoring these metrics, researchers are able to decide when the model reaches acceptable performance, or if it needs more training - and perhaps a larger, more robust training dataset. 🦾🤖 📸: AI generated image by DALLE 3 #AI #machinelearning #deeplearning #innovation #AIgenerated #fisheries #fisheriesscience #oceanscience #RControl

Can we trust artificial intelligence? 🤖 (article in Norwegian, can be translated to english) In this debate-article published in Fiskeribladet (The Fisheries Magazine), Asgeir J. Sørensen (NTNU, UiT) and Jørgen Berge (UiT) discuss the potentials and problems with employing AI for marine science. 🌊🐟🎣 #AI #Fisheries #fisheriesscience

The lesser sandeel (Ammodytes marinus) is an elongated, small fish inhabiting the North Atlantic Ocean. It lives near sandy bottoms, where it spends most of its time burrowed under the sand! 🌊🏖 Under the comfort of the sand, it sleeps during the night. When morning comes, the sandeel emerges from its sandy hole, to eat - a diet mostly consisting of copepods, fish eggs, and fish-larvae 🦐🐟. During the winter, it actually hibernates in the sand - and just like a bear, will sleep during the cold season! 🐻 Norway has one of the largest fisheries of sandeel. Up until 2003, it was a mostly unregulated fishery - but now it is strictly regulated both internationally, and within the country. This has helped lead to an increase in the sandeel population with higher recruitment. 🤩📈 This is especially important considering the North Sea, where the sandeel is a keystone species. Keystone species are important for the structure and the stability of the entire ecosystem. In fact, during years when the sandeel population is low, fishing is strictly forbidden. ✖ This helps the population grow, and conserves the North Sea ecosystem. 🧐👍 📸: A burrowed sandeel (By the Institute of Marine Research, Norway) #sandeel #RControl #fisheries #fisheriesfact #norwegianfish #fishfacts #marinebiology #fisheriesbiology

Did you know that AI can be used to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing?🎣❌🤖 IUU fishing contributes to as much as 20% of total catches, a worrisome pattern contributing to overfishing and imbalance in marine ecosystems. 📉 Global Fishing Watch employs an AI model which uses an advanced algorithm analyzing huge amounts of data to uncover these illegal activities. Read more about this in the article from BBC!👇🛳️ #endiuufishing #RControl #BBC #SINTEF #AI #machinelearning #innovation #fisheries #fisheriesscience

The Norwegian shrimp-fishery has long tradition in southern part of the country.🦐 Here, small shrimp-trawlers dominate the fishery. Some vessels operate with a small crew consisting of only one or two people!🧐 These fisheries usually cook their #shrimp (Pandalus borealis) on board, providing freshly cooked shrimp to the markets in Southern #Norway, and also some to the neighbouring country Sweden.🍤🥣 Currently, the #quota for shrimp is very low, at only 3530 tons. However, catches so far have been good, which may indicate a better quota for next year.📊 #shrimpfishery #norwegianfisheries #RControl #shrimpfacts #pandalusborealis 📸© 2004 by Tomasz Sienicki, CC BY 2.5, via Wikimedia Commons

3D camera systems can be used to estimate the weight of herring (Clupea harengus), efficiently and accurately!🐟 In 2011, SINTEF researchers published their research on herring weight estimation, using a high-speed conveyor belt and 3D machine vision system. 📹🎣 Weight of individual fish was estimated by using prediction models, using both 2D and 3D features to achieve high accuracy 🤓👍 You can find the full article here! 👉 https://lnkd.in/dEuA39Yp 📸: 3D images of a frozen-thawed herring. R-Control is a project where #SINTEF collaborates with two industry partners; #Tustern AS and #Gullholmen AS. 🤝 Both are active #fisheries, owning multiple fishing vessels. This valuable collaboration between science and industry is a win-win for both sides. 🤩💡 Researchers from SINTEF are able to test and develop new #technologies, like the CatchScanner, within real fisheries. 🎣🤖👨🔬 The fisheries on the other hand, will be the first to experience and use these effective solutions, increasing their #efficiency at sea which leads to money and time saved! 📈💸 #fisheriesscience #RControl 📸: Emlyn John Davies (SINTEF)
