The EU Deforestation Regulation #EUDR delayed by one year, but survives attacks. A major victory for forests!🥇 🔷 The #EU Council and Parliament reached an agreement on December 3, 2024, to delay the entry into an application for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by one year, until 30 December 2025. 🔷 The law requires that all traders and operators importing to, or exporting from, the EU would have to ensure that the product does not originate from an area deforested after 31 December 2020. 🔷 The regulation's core goal—to minimize the EU's contribution to global deforestation by ensuring only deforestation-free products are placed on or exported from the EU market—remains unchanged.   - Despite the one-year delay, not allowing the weakening the EUDR law itself is a major victory for #forests, #biodiversity and #climate. We applaud the Council and the Commission for standing firm against attempts to undermine the very essence of this important law, says Tørris Jæger, Secretary-General of the Rainforest Foundation Norway. 🔷 In the trialogue negotiation, several amendments from the European Parliament majority, consisting of the European People's Party (EPP) and several right-wing groups, were rejected. These amendments would have seriously undermined the EUDR's contents and efficacy, and their rejection is a major win for the world's forests.    Rainforest Foundation Norway will now focus fully on preparations for the application's entry into effect in a year, and in particular, convincing the EU that the large remaining contiguous rainforests in the world must be designated high-deforestation-risk areas.

Disappearing rain 🌧 Some call it a suicide for large scale farming, others call it payback time for the forest. Either way, we hope the findings in our new report will have a ripple effect on Brazilian agriculture and policies.    Together with the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Rainforest Foundation Norway have looked at how deforestation from the expansion of agribusiness in the Brazilian Amazon is severely eroding the region's climate and agricultural stability, with far-reaching environmental and economic implications both locally and globally. The study has several ground-breaking findings:  👉 The effect of deforestation on climate change: The rainy season is up to 89 days late and by isolating factors, the researchers have found that deforestation alone is the cause of 40 % of regional changes in climate.     👉 The cost of deforestation on agribusiness: Soy, maize and cattle business are severely affected by deforestation in Brazil. 🌳 We must ensure that mining worldwide is conducted responsibly, upholding human rights and minimizing adverse environmental impacts. A new brief from Mighty Earth and Rainforest Foundation Norway analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of mining standards in addressing biodiversity and deforestation. ⛏️ We examined the limitations of three existing mining standards (IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance The Copper Mark, and Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) to avoid deforestation and minimize impacts on critical ecosystems like rainforests. The future of the #EUDR hangs in the balance and only the Commission and the Member States can put an end to the sabotage from the conservative and righ-wing majority in the European Parliament. We call on them to reject ALL amendment from this slim Parliament majority and ensure that the EUDR enters into application unharmed.

🤚 As EU institutions negotiate the fate of the EU deforestation regulations, proposed amendments from the European Parliament that would sacrifice huge forest areas must be rejected, says Rainforest Foundation Norway. "The conservative and right-wing majority is prepared to sacrifice the world’s forests and climate to please the European forestry industry. If these attempts to sabotage the EUDR are not stopped, the anti-climate and anti-nature majority will threaten the entire European Green Deal, in addition to sacrificing thousands of square kilometers of forest", says Anders Haug Larsen, director of international advocacy at Rainforest Foundation Norway.
