Happy new drone year! 2024 was thrilling for the development of drone applications for environmental monitoring and mapping. Also for SeaBee Research Infrastructure! A few highlights from our 2024 includes: 1) Lots of #drone data collected. SeaBee's Geonode platform now contains >3000 datasets. All open access, https://lnkd.in/dfmkFJNB. 2) New drones and sensors, incl. red and green #LIDAR sensors for improved 3D terrain and #underwatermapping and #environmentalassessments, https://lnkd.in/d6-J3veq. 3) A public stakeholder event hosted by Norwegian Environment Agency. All talks are available from SeaBees website and YouTube, https://lnkd.in/dwbWF6Cf. 4) New publications, including how to sample marine environmental data and mapping #kelp forests using drones, https://lnkd.in/dG8g4sNE. 5) Brand-new website, with more on SeaBee's activities, achievements and publications, www.seabee.no. A warm thank you to all our partners and collaborators! The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), NINA - Norsk institutt for naturforskning, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norsk Regnesentral, Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway, GRID-Arendal, SpectroFly ApS, Tiepoint. Norwegian Environment Agency, OBAMA-NEXT Project, C-BLUES EU, Scandinavian Drone, YellowScan, MicaSense, now AgEagle, DJI, HEXADRONE, DeltaQuad, Specim, Spectral Imaging Ltd. We need a project manager support our administration and logistics in the Fjordlab project. We will develop the future ocean infrastructure for marine research through a 400 MNOK grant over a three year implementation period. The project is hosted at Department of Marine Technology (IMT) - NTNU, the NTNU Faculty of Engineering in close collaboration with SINTEF Ocean. The Fjordlab facility will represent a substantial increase of our capabilities to observe the ocean and run field experiments both on the surface and underwater to create the ocean we need in the future we want! If you have experience with complex project and this sounds like an interesting challenge, see the link below:

SeaBee attended Havforskermøtet 2024 in Tromsø on Tuesday 26 Nov! 🤩 Kristina discussed the protocols described in her 2024 paper, including the steps of flying drones for imagery, identification and annotation of habitats and species to train the machine learning, and then the output of the machine learning which provides habitat predictions for shallow marine ecosystems, supported by ground truth data. I discussed some preliminary results of our drone-bourne LiDAR system, which we used to estimate eelgrass habitat volume within our study site at Ølbergholmen in Vestfold. 🌊 Martin Hansen Skjelvareid from UiT Norges arktiske universitet also presented about the MASSIMAL project, and how they are using UAVs with hyperspectral imaging to identify species of marine vegetation, as well as their biomass and physiological state. He mentioned his connection to SeaBee, and his (hopeful) plans to further collaborate with SeaBee and our GeoNode database.
