Focus should be more about what to not do, than what to focus on. At Shapemaker we discuss prioritization constantly. It can be quite draining at times, but it has the advantage of being a good indicator of engagement. People who have the energy to discuss what to prioritize are both allowed to share their thoughts and cares enough to do so. I've heard people refer to focus as "choosing what to do" and I've also seen people "prioritize" more and more things at the same time. At which point does your short priority list become a backlog which needs internal prioritization in turn? I try to take the reverse approach: If you are trying to focus, your main activity should be to remove things from priority. When you have removed everything which is not crucial, you have prioritized everything which is left. And yes, crucial things DO have the same priority. You can meet demanding compliance requirements from enterprise clients as a small startup, if you are smart about it. As a CTO I occasionally come across solutions to problems and think "hey, why isn't this the norm already?!". One of those solutions is Tagore AS. At every company I've worked for, people have recognized the importance of information security in the increasingly dangerous internet environment we live in. Few of them seem to have found cost-effective means of meeting that challenge. A key insight I've gained during my time in Shapemaker is that most of the callenges we face in information security are shared across companies, especially small companies. And what a start it’s been! 🎉 We kicked off with an introduction to the fantastic teams at Nordic Innovation House. Then, Eva Nahari opened with an insightful and refreshingly honest session on "Investor Dating." Eva is a core TINC mentor, providing invaluable guidance in her 1:1 sessions and workshops. Our first day wrapped up with a transformative founder workshop led by the incomparable Julie Hanna. Julie has been a pillar of TINC since day one, and her wisdom is nothing short of life-changing for our teams. On day two, Shomit Ghose shared his “From Start to Exit” talk, challenging our companies to rethink business models, pricing, and go-to-market strategies. Shomit is a key mentor here at TINC, and his depth of knowledge is simply unmatched. Later, we welcomed investor Homan Yuen for a feedback session. Homan’s extensive and deep experience made for valuable, direct insights into each company's unique challenges. Pitch day practice took off with Nathan Gold — our #goldtouched TINC pitch coach, who skillfully and calmly guides each team to bring their best selves to the stage. Day two wrapped with a powerful founder talk by Olav Sindre Kriken of Tana, who shared his own entrepreneurial journey, brimming with honesty and inspiration. Today, we had the privilege of hosting Martina Lauchengco, who tackled the "3 Myths of Product" and shared invaluable insights on product marketing and positioning. Her book, #Loved, is a must-read! How do you know the long-term effects of your decisions on your product? As a CTO I recently advised our Chief Product Officer about a tactical introduction of a new technology into our product. It's a small extra short-term effort and it will lead to slightly increased operational risks and costs over time, but it remedies the long-term risk that the current technology choices simply won't cut it anymore 5-10 years into the future with predicted growth. This effect would have been completely opaque for our CPO until it was too late, had someone not told him he needed to create space for it. How could he have learnt to identify this risk on his own? I don't think he realistically could. I think this is one of few situations where the reason for making a technical choice should be allowed to simply be "experience". One of those times you should be happy to have an outspoken technical person on a management team. Engineers are typically conservative risk-takers, I'm still on the lookout for a consistent way of telling when that's the best choice to make. The power of creating immediate value can not be understated. I learnt this from Daniel Pettersson a couple of years back and it made a strong impression on me. If you're lucky enough to be in a project that you can plan, congratulations to you! Use this opportunity to figure out the best way of doing things. If you aren't that lucky and are in a difficult project with lots of moving parts, life can feel kind of hopeless. Try asking this question, exactly like this: "What's the most valuable thing I can do right now?". You can actually use that question whenever you feel like you don't know what to do, because (almost) regardless of what you answer it get's you forward. Small step by small step. It's waaay better than standing still and the value compounds over time if you keep asking the question.
