🌍 Unlocking Nature's Extremes: XTREAM Takes Off! 🚀
Microorganisms thriving in extreme environments hold incredible potential as a treasure trove of enzymes, chemicals, and pharmaceutical compounds. Yet, their unique capabilities have remained largely untapped due to the challenges and costs of traditional discovery methods.
XTREAM is here to change that. With an interdisciplinary consortium 🤝 of 13 partners from academia, industry, and research institutions, this new Horizon Europe project aims to revolutionize the discovery and application of aquatic extremophiles for a sustainable circular bioeconomy.
🔍 Our mission: To develop groundbreaking tools for rapid, efficient, and sustainable exploration of extreme microbiomes.

➕ Minimize the environmental footprint of sampling extreme environments.
➕ Use AI-driven multiomics to reveal hidden treasures in microbial communities.
➕ Advance computational and analytical tools for sustainable bio-discovery.
➕ Unlock enzymes, metabolites, and microbes for pharma, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, agriculture, and more.
➕ Bridge the gap between discovery and market adoption through training, dissemination, and stakeholder engagement.
➕ Uphold ethical and legal compliance in every step of the journey.
Our consortium, coordinated by NORCE includes leading European SMEs like Algalif, Syngens, Prozomix Limited, Scienseed and ERINN Innovation, the excellent public universities Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Teesside University, Wageningen University & Research and The University Centre in Svalbard, and the outstanding RTOs GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel and Centro de Astrobiología (CAB), CSIC-INTA, all pioneers in fields like functional metagenomics, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and microfluidics.
