Big events create big waste challenges. 🚮👇 The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 will bring millions to Prayagraj, where the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers meet. As one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, it requires massive logistical planning, including waste management. Without strong infrastructure and clear policies, waste piles up, putting sacred sites and natural environments at risk. In a recent interview with Doordarshan Uttar Pradesh, Annupa Mattu Ahi, Head of Asia Public Affairs at TOMRA, discussed why sustainability is at the heart of this year’s Kumbh Mela and how innovation in waste management can make a real difference (check out the full interview here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eJvnEed ). Here’s what stood out 🔎 🔹 Planning is everything – Waste piles up fast. TOMRA’s reverse vending tech makes sure bottles and containers are collected and reused instead of left behind. 🔹 Public engagement is key – Policies alone aren’t enough. Programs like Green Kumbh are proving that when people understand the impact, they act differently. 🔹 Deposit return schemes work – Deposit return systems have changed recycling behavior worldwide. Applied at events, they could mean less waste, cleaner spaces, and a more circular system. The Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers are sacred. Protecting them requires lasting solutions, not quick fixes. 💪 Let’s move from cleanup to prevention. 📢 Connecticut has modernized its deposit return system (DRS), commonly known as the 'bottle bill' in the U.S., making it easier, more efficient, and more rewarding to recycle drink containers.👇 TOMRA’s new case study highlights how policymakers balanced environmental, municipal, and private sector objectives to create a system capable of recycling 90% of beverage packaging waste.♻️ Key modernizations include: 💲 Doubling the deposit value – From $0.05 to $0.10, making returns more rewarding ☑️ Expanding the range of eligible containers – More beverage types now included 🏪 Enhancing the redemption network – Making returns more convenient for consumers The impact? A 30% increase in container returns, with projections to recycle 2 billion containers annually. Beyond boosting return rates, this modernization effort is also reducing litter and creating green jobs, proving that well-designed DRS policies deliver real results. Cities need a smarter way to handle single-use takeaway packaging. 🚮 With a well-designed, open managed reuse system, businesses and consumers can keep packaging in circulation instead of sending it straight to landfills. Here’s what that looks like 👇 ✅ Convenient for consumers – Use, return, repeat. No extra hassle. ✅ Cost-effective for businesses – Less reliance on disposable packaging means long-term savings. ✅ Cleaner cities, less waste – Reduced litter and lower waste management costs. The shift is already happening. Let’s make #reuse the standard, not the exception. 🔄 Check out TOMRA’s vision for reuse here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dBEfRChk

EU moves to cut textile & food waste. 👏 Here’s what’s changing 👇 On Tuesday night, the European Parliament and Council agreed on new rules to tackle textile and food waste across the EU. What’s changing? ♻️ 🧥 Producers will pay for collection, sorting & recycling – New extended producer responsibility (#EPR) schemes will require textile producers (including e-commerce brands) to finance the collection, sorting, and recycling of clothing, footwear, and household textiles. 🥕 Food waste targets are now binding – By 2030, EU countries must cut food waste by 10% in manufacturing and 30% in retail, restaurants, and households, compared to 2021-2023 levels. Businesses handling large amounts of food waste will also need to donate safe, unsold food instead of throwing it away. ⚠️ Fast fashion is being put on notice – For the first time, member states are expected to address fast fashion and ultra-fast fashion practices when setting up financial contributions to the EPR schemes. With 12.6 million tonnes of textile waste generated every year in the EU, and less than 1% of textiles recycled into new products, this is a big step. But with 30 months before implementation, the challenge is turning policy into action, fast. At TOMRA, we’re already working on solutions to scale textile circularity through automated sorting technology. Want to know more? Successful Contract Signing with OLO Bratislava! Today, we had the pleasure of signing a contract with OLO Bratislava, the municipal company responsible for waste collection in the city. Together with Ing. Mgr. Ivan Sokáč and Ing. Marek Horváth from OLO, as well as Michael Eikelmann and Gerolf Wölfert Woelfert from c-trace, we officially sealed this important partnership. After a long and competitive tendering process, c-trace successfully prevailed and won the contract. The project includes the complete digitalization of OLO’s processes, including an RFID system, as well as the implementation of fleet management and automated route planning. This marks a major milestone for both our customer, OLO, and for us at c-trace. The project implementation will span two years and will transition into a long-term service contract. The world’s 7 best-performing deposit return schemes (#DRS) have one thing in common... 💡👇 They make returning beverage containers easy.♻️ Here’s what sets them apart: 🔵 Consumers can return empty containers right where they shop 🔵 Automated reverse vending makes the process seamless This is what we call return-to-retail: a model that drives higher return rates and keeps packaging in the loop. Well-designed systems with retailer involvement make recycling more convenient, and that’s key to a truly circular system. 🔄 Watch the full video to see how it works 👉 https://lnkd.in/epZv2Ts7 https://lnkd.in/epZv2Ts7
