The Arctic is increasingly affected by Plastic pollution. With the global trajectory indicating that plastic production with double within the next 15 years, we need a Global Plastics Treaty to tackle plastic pollution at all stages of the plastic life cycle. Our mission is to create environmental knowledge that encourages positive change.
Om oss
Established in 1989, GRID-Arendal’s mission is to create environmental knowledge that encourages positive change. We do this by organizing and transforming available environmental data into credible, science-based information products, delivered through innovative communication tools and capacity building services targeting relevant stakeholders. GRID-Arendal is a UNEP partner and works closely with other UN agencies and partners around the world to connect science to policy. Our goal is to shorten the distance between the emergence of new science and policy actions. We seek to influence thinking and action at the level of the global community on issues that require collective action because we cannot solve many problems through action at the national level alone.

Mountains seem mighty, but they are vulnerable ecosystems that are sensitive to the changing climate. Some of our closest cousins, the mountain gorilla, are under immense pressure as a result. This week we met with Matthias Jurek, Programme Manager of the Vanishing Treasures Programme from UN Environment Programme to talk about our current and future collaborations. We look forward to working closer with our friends at the United Nations Environment Programme Vienna office. Kelp forests are something that we forget about. They aren't as visible as terrestrial forests, but they are equally amazing in their rich biodiversity and importance to the people who depend on them. They are also just as threatened by climate change. Back in 2023, we wrote the Into the Blue report with our friends and partners at UN Environment Programme and the Norwegian Blue Forest Network. Check out the report here https://lnkd.in/dT9SEnY9 #Kelp #ClimateChange #coastline

GRID-Arendal and IUCN have been supporting five countries in West-Africa: Sierra Leone, Senegal, Sap Tome & Principe, Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde through the negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty. At the fifth negotiating round (#INC5) recently in Busan, Korea we spoke with Paul A. Lamin, Deputy Director for the Environment Protection Agency (EPA-SL) and country negotiator for Sierra Leone on his experiences and preparations for INC-5. Unfortunately INC-5 did not result in a global plastics agreement, yet. We look forward to INC5.2 and continuing our support in 2025 for an effective global plastics treaty for West-Africa!

I’m pleased to contribute to the first "Comms Lab webinar", where I’ll share how I work with media at GRID-Arendal. This hands-on series, organised for IW:LEARN is designed to help participants strengthen their communication skills and make a real-world impact. What is IW:LEARN? IW:LEARN, the GEF’s International Waters Learning Exchange and Resource Network, supports global collaboration by sharing best practices and innovative solutions for better transboundary water management. Here’s what you’ll gain in the first webinar: 1️⃣ Master the Media Pitch: Craft effective press pitch, identify the right media contacts, and pitch your stories with confidence. 2️⃣ Create Vertical Videos: Learn how to plan, shoot, and edit engaging TikToks, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts. 3️⃣ Design Social Media Campaigns: Use tools like Canva to create and execute impactful cross-platform campaigns. 📹 Part 2: Put Your Skills to the Test! Participants will submit their work—press releases, vertical videos, or social media campaigns—for live feedback in the second webinar. Walk away with polished, ready-to-use content. I do this with my great co-workers Olivia Rempel & Guendalina De Luigi 💚 💡 Join us on 15.
