Centre for Research-based innovation - Biodegradable plastics for marine applications
Om oss
Our research aims to reduce plastic litter and associated problems (ghost fishing, macro and microplastic) caused by the fishery and aquaculture industries. The goal is that traditional plastics in these sectors can be replaced with new biodegradable materials.

In cooperation with UArctic (University of the Arctic), students and scientists from #Norway, #Canada and #Scotland have spent the Advent Season at a research expedition in the Barents Sea. Here they have been testing snow crab pots and bottom trawls. Partners from SFI Dsolve also participated on the expedition. Read Center Director Roger B. --- SFI Dsolve has made it to the news this week! Meet Martine, a student at UiT Norges arktiske universitet, The Arctic University of Norway, who joined our cleanup expedition with the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries Fiskeridirektoratet (Norge) to recover lost fishing gear. Read what she and Roger Hansen, leader of Nord Fiskarlag in the The Norwegian Fishermen’s Association, think about new gear solutions for the #fishingindustry 👇 https://lnkd.in/dfjg4TyH (Norwegian text only) #fishery #environment #innovation #biodegradableplastics #cleanoceans #science #gosthfishing SINTEF SINTEF Ocean SINTEF Industri Norner AS NORSUS SALT Norges Fiskarlag Norges Råfisklag Norges forskningsråd

This week, Dsolve is on an expedition with Fiskeridirektoratet (Norge), the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries, to retrieve and document #ghostfishing and #marine #litter caused by #fishing activities. This knowledge is crucial for developing and implementing new #biodegradable materials in fishing gear. The expedition is a collaboration between SFI Dsolve, the Arctic University of Norway UiT Norges arktiske universitet, and the Directorate of Fisheries, taking place on UiT's research vessel FF Helmer Hanssen. Researchers from several of the project partners, NORSUS , SINTEF, and Norner AS, are on board. Dsolve is funded by Norges forskningsråd, the Research Council of Norway. This year's cleanup expedition for lost fishing gear, organized by the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries Fiskeridirektoratet (Norge), starts this week. Since the early 1980s, the Directorate has been conducting cleanups of lost fishing gear and has retrieved several thousand tons of such equipment. This year's expedition will go from Ålesund to Kjøllefjord 🌊🐟 https://lnkd.in/du6Agr-z #fishery #cleanoceans #ghostfishing #retrieval #fishinggear #ALDFG #cleanup

The work carried out by SINTEF to test fishing gear made of #degradable materials was last week presented at this year's Nor-Fishing. The testing of new materials within SFI Dsolve was a theme at the Fishermen's joint stand organized by, among others, the SFI partners Norges Fiskarlag and Norges Råfisklag. Read more in this article from Dsolve partner Norges Fiskarlag: https://lnkd.in/dA7wpKKs (Norwegian text only). In the article you can also read about a newly developed solution to reduce emissions of cuttings, developed by Nothuset AS.
