Everything we know about Donald Trump's inditement

Donald Trump was “shocked” when he learned Thursday that a Manhattan grand jury voted to indict him, according to his attorney, who revealed the former president will face 34 counts when he’s arraigned next week.

Joe Tacopina, Trump's lawyer, said he talked to Trump, 76, after the indictment came down, saying they both learned about it through media reports and not from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.

“He’s ready to fight. You know, he’s the toughest guy I know. He was shocked, you know, because we really weren’t – I was shocked.”

“I’ve never been more angry about a charge because today, the rule of law in the United States of America died. It’s dead. It’s dead.”

The sealed indictment was filed with the clerk’s office in Manhattan Supreme Court in lower Manhattan Thursday evening.

The specific charges were not made public, but sources said Trump is facing over two dozen counts related to business fraud.

Tacopina believes that Trump will be charged with over 30 counts of business fraud.

“We now heard 34 counts, and I guarantee you it’s going to be 34 counts when we find out next week.”

A spokesperson for Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg confirmed the indictment and said the office had contacted Trump’s team to arrange his surrender.

Tacopina also confirmed that Trump will not be put in handcuffs when he turns himself in next week.

“I’m sure they’ll try to get every ounce of publicity he can from this thing. As far as mugshots, perp-walk — I’m sure they’ll try to make sure they get some joy out of this by parading him.”

Since January, the grand jury that returned the indictment had been hearing evidence and witness testimony related to an alleged hush-money payment made ahead of the 2016 election by then-Trump attorney Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels to her silence her about an affair she claimed to have had with Trump in 2006.

Cohen pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court in 2018 and was sentenced to three years in prison for crimes related to the Daniels payment and another to McDougal he helped arrange prior to the 2016 election.

Trump, who was president at the time of Cohen’s guilty plea, did not face charges by federal prosecutors over the payments.

The Manhattan DA’s Office then launched its probe, with the case gaining momentum in recent months.

“Today’s indictment is not the end of this chapter; but rather, just the beginning."

“Now that the charges have been filed, it is better for the case to let the indictment speak for itself. The two things I wish to say at this time is that accountability matters and I stand by my testimony and the evidence I have provided to DANY.”

As with all living current and former presidents, Trump is protected at all times by Secret Service agents, and that won’t change if he is sent to prison — unless Congress changes the rules.

If trump is convicted, A former agency official said an agent will not likely be sharing a cell with Trump, but would be present on the property to ensure his safety.
