It was great to bring together a super engaged audience from across The University of Auckland, last week, to explore New Zealand’s agricultural sector and the opportunities for research to drive impact. Highlights included: - A showcase of Ngāpouri Research Farm from Dr. Mark Oliver demonstrating its role in cutting-edge agricultural and biomedical research. - Insights from agritech expert Simon Yarrow on global challenges and opportunities, emphasising agriculture’s critical role in feeding the world by 2050 and examples of the real-world-world innovation from inspiring #Kiwi companies like BioLumic, Halter, Engender Technologies Limited, and Robotics Plus, and more.  - A collaborative workshop led by Simon to work on innovative solutions to interesting challenges in the Ag sector. We’re excited to build on this mahi in 2025 - fostering collaboration across The University of Auckland to tackle challenges and unlock opportunities in agriculture. UniServices was delighted to host a sold-out panel discussion yesterday, for current The University of Auckland PhD students, to open up their understanding of entrepreneurship as a pathway forward outside of academia. Facilitated by Dr Stephen Lo (Investment Manager at UniServices), we heard firsthand from our panelists, Dr Dan Xu, PhD (CEO and co-founder of ElementX) and Dr Isaac Cleland (CEO and founder of RosterLab), about their journeys going from PhD candidates at The University of Auckland to becoming startup founders. They highlighted how PhD skills such as problem-solving and resilience help equip researchers for entrepreneurial success. Attendees gained valuable insights about how entrepreneurs think and what it takes to turn ideas into impactful ventures. With the support of the The University of Auckland programmes like Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Velocity: The University of Auckland Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programme and UniServices' expertise, entrepreneurship is a rewarding and achievable option for researchers. UniServices recently hosted our Inaugural Portfolio/Investor meet up at the University of Auckland - Newmarket Innovation Precinct. The event was organised by the Investment team led by Director – Investment Stephen Flint. “It was wonderful to be able to connect our portfolio companies with such a large number of investors while showcasing the Newmarket Innovation Precinct”.   Over 80 invitees including Professor Frank Bloomfield, our Board Chair and Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Operations & Registrar Adrienne Cleland and Alexandra Thomas, director of the University’s Research and Innovation Office, as well as representatives from the majority of the local investor ecosystem packed the venue.  It was great to hear from the line-up of 16 speakers, each one representing a portfolio company accounting for a third of the current companies in UniServices’ portfolio. The evening brimmed with positivity, success and entrepreneurship. We look forward to our second meet-up in 2025!

We are thrilled to announce a major step forward in cancer treatment worldwide. UniServices has signed a patent acquisition agreement with Guangzhou Salustier Biosciences for LX-132, a promising cancer therapeutic approved for clinical trials in China. This breakthrough is the result of over a decade of collaboration between The University of Auckland and Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, supported by MBIE Science and Innovation, and led by Associate Professors Jeff Smaill and Adam Patterson, University of Auckland medical oncology researchers and Maurice Wilkins Centre investigators. With LX-132’s potential to improve outcomes for cancer patients globally, we're proud to be a part of this milestone in New Zealand-China biopharma partnerships.
