How do infrastructure upgrades improve emergency medical response times? University Hospital Southampton NHS FT’s helipad has received a £153,000 donation from the HELP Appeal - County Air Ambulance Trust, the only U.K. charity dedicated to funding NHS hospital helipads. The funding has enabled critical upgrades, including the installation of energy-efficient safety lighting, enhancing visibility for air ambulance and coastguard pilots, and ensuring safe landings at all hours. Since its construction in 2011—funded in part by a £1 million contribution from the HELP Appeal—the helipad has facilitated over 4,000 helicopter emergency medical service landings, including missions from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. David French, CEO of University Hospital Southampton, highlighted the vital role of the HELP Appeal in sustaining emergency medical care. HELP Appeal CEO Robert Bertram emphasized that improved lighting will allow air ambulances to continue delivering patients safely, day and night. The HELP Appeal has funded 55 helipads across the U.K., supporting over 29,000 landings, with more projects underway, including a £300,000 contribution to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance’s relocation near Southampton Airport. Cornwall Air Ambulance has officially accepted its second Leonardo AW169, marking a major milestone in its mission to improve critical care services. Built at Leonardo Helicopters’ Milan facility, the aircraft was collected by two Cornwall Air Ambulance pilots and has now arrived in Gloucester, where it will undergo a medical fit-out—a process expected to take several months. This development coincides with the Heli2 Appeal surpassing the £2 million milestone, leaving just £197,000 to reach its £2.85 million target. The new helicopter will enhance operational resilience, allowing for increased air missions and ultimately saving more lives. Paul Westaway, consultant in Operations Projects, highlighted the complexity of the process, from configuration to regulatory compliance.
