Have you seen them? Three pou whenua stand proudly in the State Highway 29A roundabout, welcoming visitors and the people of Tauranga. These artworks represent three tupuna wāhine (female ancestors), who watch over the area as kaitiaki (guardians). Integrating the cultural identity and values of mana whenua is central to the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Baypark to Bayfair Link Project. Over the past decade, NZTA, Beca’s urban and landscape design team, CPB, and representatives and artists from Ngā Pōtiki, Ngāi Tukairangi and Ngāti Tapu have collaborated to create a suite of mahi toi (artworks), including carvings patterns, sculptures and pou whenua. We’re proud to have worked with NZTA, mana whenua, artists Maraea Timutimu, Stu McDonald and Linda Munn, Longveld, CPB Contractors and Align Limited to bring these artworks to life. Keep an eye out for their welcoming presence next time you pass by. Congratulations to the Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities and Beca team for winning the Environment & Sustainability Award at the NZ Spatial Excellence Awards held in December! These awards celebrate the highest standard of achievement in the New Zealand geospatial community. The Amenity Access tool evaluates how easily residents can walk to community amenities from any Kāinga Ora property and supports prioritising development in areas close to existing public transport links, employment, education centres, health facilities, and greenspaces. This tool aligns with the Kāinga Ora Environment Strategy, offering a pathway to respond to a climate-changed 1.5-degree future by outlining ways to reduce transport greenhouse gas emissions at the earliest possible decision point. A crucial component of the tool is that Kāinga Ora can quickly assess transport emissions for a property based on its access to essential amenities, making it easier to embed climate change considerations into decision making. The project was delivered as an interactive web map, and the tool has been used to support decision making across Kāinga Ora’s Strategy, Market Delivery and Investment and Planning teams. Well done to all those involved - Tom Kane, Kirsten F. and Samantha Meyer at Kāinga Ora, and Josie Hawkey, Jaime Smith and Caitlin McDonough-Margison from our Beca team. #MakeEverydayBetter #Beca #Geospatial

1184 landowners supported, 2.5 million cubic metres of material managed, and thousands of hectares of productive whenua recovered. The Silt Recovery Taskforce has completed the critical task of removing silt and debris from flood-impacted properties post-Cyclone Gabrielle. Earlier this week, Darren de Klerk, Business Director for Water and Silt Recovery Taskforce Lead, spoke to RNZ about the progress of the silt and debris recovery efforts in the Hawke's Bay. The taskforce has achieved some fantastic results so far, with a small amount of work left in 2025. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Vanuatu after yesterday’s 7.3 magnitude earthquake, which struck about 30km west of Port Vila. We have strong ties to Vanuatu and have seen the strength and resilience of its communities over many years. As the full impact becomes clear, our team will be ready to assist the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade in any way we can with Vanuatu’s recovery. Some fabulous news from the world stage as we get ready to wrap up the year! CapitaSpring, the breathtakingly beautiful mixed-use tower, located in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District and owned by CapitaLand, has won the prestigious International High-Rise Award 2024/25. The jury described it as ‘the best high-rise building in the world at the moment’ – and it’s easy to see why! By seamlessly blending the city’s urban planning needs with private development goals, CapitaSpring creates an awe-inspiring experience for those who work, play and visit. The skyscraper is a vibrant destination featuring offices, serviced residence units, an indoor hawker market and retail spaces. Topping it all off is a public park on the rooftop, 51 floors above the city, offering a lush green space and spectacular views. As market leaders in the design of high-rise sustainable buildings, our team’s experience in building services and environmentally sustainable design was key to creating the stunning building with its iconic vertical public parks that climb up the tower. This award follows hot on the heels of Pan Pacific Orchard, Singapore, another flagship project for our services and ESD team, winning Best Tall Building Worldwide at this year’s CTBUH Awards. A huge well-done to our team, it’s a pretty special achievement to land both awards this year. Our special thanks to our wonderful clients CapitaLand Development and UOL Group Limited who engaged us to deliver these beautiful projects.
