CATE is a professional organisation for people working in the fields of career and transition education The focus of CATE is on the career education and development of youth and their transition from school into the wider world of employment, training and/or further education. High quality careers education and development is an essential part of preparing youth for their future. Supporting learners to make informed decisions about their options is critical as this can improve their overall quality of life, sense of purpose and the contributions they make to their whanau and community. CATE NZ supports its members by offering professional development programmes, collaboration opportunities and shared resources that ensure young people have the skills to map their career pathway and have the confidence to respond to challenging and changing circumstance as they emerge.

COMIN UP ON NOVEMBER 14TH—At the Empowering our Youth Part II Research webinar, we indicated that there would be a follow-up workshop that is action focused. After some planning and logistics, in collaboration with CATE and CDANZ, we are pleased to announce the launch of this workshop on 14 November. It is a drop-in style workshop aimed at ideating, gathering your input, and (hopefully) identifying some key actionable steps. Our doors will be open from 9.30am to 3.30pm. We welcome you to drop-in when it is convenient for you and stay for as long as you wish. There will also be a similar online room open, facilitated by EPIT, for the duration of the workshop. Your voice and input are valuable in helping shape the next steps, and we welcome your participation in this workshop. Please use the link below to register for the in-person or online session.

A great career education program can be a powerful tailwind for schools that are under increasing pressure to improve educational outcomes. It is a powerful lever in addressing some of the biggest challenges to learning success, such as student well-being, equity and, particularly, engagement. A student who understands the relevance of what they’re learning and has the chance to work out why it matters to them and their future is on the way to developing authentic agency over their learning and life. Introducing careers education from as early as year 6 can deliver these transformative outcomes and starting that journey can be done in small, simple ways. Find out how over 50 NZ schools have integrated BECOME into their program. This is one to bring the leadership team along to! The Careers Quality Framework is now available online. Developed by Dr Lynette Reid, who collaborated closely with stakeholders across the careers system, the Careers Quality Framework provides five high-level criteria to support quality career information, education, advice and guidance (CEIAG). The criteria are underpinned by Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the key principle—informing an inclusive framework of tangata whenua and tangata Tiriti. The Framework is also a foundational piece of work for the broader NCSS Action Plan, informing the delivery of workstreams and the next steps in building quality across the system. The five criteria provide a way of thinking about how we lead, practice, support, empower and situate career knowledge and practice, with TEC leading a workshop at the upcoming CATE conference on ways to apply the criteria in our day-to-day work. In addition to the release of the Careers Quality Framework document, TEC is also creating some material for applying the framework to a variety of situations and settings, as well as ensuring its own work reflects quality practice.
