As part of HOBSON LEAVY’s role as a Foundation Partner of Chapter Zero New Zealand, we have spoken to several leading New Zealand directors, seeking their insights and thoughts on the climate challenge, through their experiences in the boardroom.   For this interview, we discussed the climate challenge with Bridget Coates CFInstD, whose response was notably framed within the view of an Opportunity Response to Climate Challenges.   “Our immediate challenge going forward is ensuring we don’t overlook the opportunity side of the equation. We’ve focused so heavily on risk and compliance to date. The next step I believe is to translate our climate progress into authentic and meaningful narratives which appeal to our global investors, customers, consumers, and employees.”   We would like to thank Bridget for her important work at the Centre for Sustainable Finance: Toitū Tahua and longstanding contribution to some of Aotearoa's biggest climate challenges. • 👏 Former Governor-General the Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy has been appointed as the new chair of the Climate Change Commission effective February 2025. Joining her are two new commissioners Devon McLeod and Felicity Underhill who will take up their roles December 2024 replacing Catherine Leining and Professor James Renwick.   We’d like to acknowledge the outgoing commissioners, in particular outgoing chair Dr Rod Carr. Dr Carr has always been very generous with his time, experience and expertise, joining us at Chapter Zero events and, most recently, at the Institute of Directors in New Zealand annual Leadership Conference. We wish you all the very best for your future endeavours.

Minister of Climate Change Hon. Simon Watts has announced Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy as the new Chair of the Climate Change Commission, along with new Commissioners Felicity Underhill and Devon McLean. Dame Patsy’s appointment will take effect in February 2025. In the meantime, Commissioner and Deputy Chair Lisa Tumahai CNZM will be acting chair. Dame Patsy’s appointment follows the conclusion of Dr Rod Carr’s term, which ends in early December. “I’m pleased that Dame Patsy is joining the Commission. As former Governor-General, she will come to the role with an extensive and distinguished career in law and governance,” Mr Watts says. Mr Watts has also appointed Felicity and Devon McLean as Commissioners from December 2024 until September 2028, replacing Catherine Leining and Professor James Renwick. “Ms Underhill has worked in the energy industry for over twenty years and will bring significant experience in decarbonisation of the energy, transport and industrial sectors. She has also been actively involved in future fuel transition programmes around hydrogen,” Mr Watts says. “Mr McLean has had a long executive and governance career in the forestry and conservation fields. The Commission Board will benefit from Mr McLean’s forestry industry experience and governance expertise.” Minister Watts also thanked Dr Carr, Ms Leining and Professor Renwick for their service to the Commission over the past five years. Appointments to our board are made under the Crown Entities Act 2004, in accordance with requirements set out in the Climate Change Response Act 2002. Board members are chosen to form the necessary mix of expertise to tackle the many challenges of climate change. This appointment process is external to the Commission and is managed by the Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao. More info about the appointment process: https://lnkd.in/gKEPcSqe

#COP29 closed with a new finance goal to help countries to protect their people and economies against climate disasters, and share in the vast benefits of the clean energy boom. 💪🌍 The nearly 200 countries at the UN climate change conference in Baku, Azerbaijan also reached important agreements on carbon markets, transparent climate reporting and adaptation. The finance agreement at COP29 comes as stronger national climate plans become due from all countries next year. These new climate plans must cover all greenhouse gases and all sectors, to keep the 1.5°C warming limit within reach. Want to know more?
