Join us on our mission to stop the release of harmful synthetic refrigerants into the atmosphere.
About us
Cool-Safe is New Zealand’s single product stewardship scheme for the safe disposal of refrigerants. It is a voluntary scheme that is accredited by the Ministry for the Environment under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008. We represent all sectors of the New Zealand refrigerant industry. Operating a national refrigerant gas cylinder collection service, Cool-Safe aims to maximise the recovery, reclamation and safe destruction of contaminated, surplus and unwanted synthetic greenhouse gas refrigerants and, in doing so, minimise emissions into our atmosphere. Recovered refrigerants are collected at Recovery Centres located at Patton branches nationwide and transported to a central, secure storage facility where they are processed and/or destroyed using cost-effective, environmentally safe technology. The Cool-Safe recovery service is free to all holders of SGG refrigerants., A bounty of $15+GST per kilo is paid by Cool-Safe to the owners of this refrigerant through the collection network.

As we know, the impacts of refrigerants on our environment are significant. A big thank you to the industry working group for helping to design this scheme back in 2022 and the Minister for approving the drafting of regulations to support our sector. “I congratulate the Trust on leading a scheme that will make a real difference in reducing these emissions and managing the environmental impact of these products.” - Minister Penny Simmonds Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/gyWAr_ef

Cool-Safe reposted this
The EPA is cracking down on operators who import and sell cheap hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) gas without applying for a permit or paying the levy to cover the greenhouse gas emissions of the HFCs. The gases are mainly used in heat pumps, air conditioning, and refrigeration and in some medical devices. Illegal importers are undercutting legitimate operators and in some cases selling contaminated HFCs that could damage vehicles and equipment. The EPA recently seized HFC gases valued at more than $1 million in a joint operation with NZ Police and New Zealand Customs Service. HFCs are potent greenhouse gases. New Zealand has rules around HFC imports to reduce our use of HFCs and their contribution to climate change.
