We are excited to share Simon Tao PhD student, and Research Assistant with the Energy Centre, is the lead author of a new study, focused on the value of a carbon tax to effectively decarbonize the economy. The recently published research 'Evaluating the macroeconomic impact of environmental policies in New Zealand: A New Keynesian DSGE model to sustainability.' Signaling a carbon tax is the most effective way for New Zealand to cut emissions while supporting a stable economy. The study compares the effects of three environmental policies - carbon taxes, emissions trading schemes, and emission intensity targets on New Zealand’s economy. It also explores environmental impacts on the economy by factoring in how pollution spreads across regions. About us
The Energy Centre is a multi-disciplinary research and education centre, founded in 2004. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Energy Education Trust of New Zealand, which funds a wide array of energy projects and scholarships. EC’s mission is to provide research policy analysis and educational programmes to help business and government confront energy issues of national significance to New Zealand. The EC will accomplish this mission by: - Undertaking energy research and business and policy analysis and reviews that examine energy-related issues important to New Zealand’s future. - Reporting our findings and observations to the energy sector, government, and academic communities. - Providing energy-related education that creates future leaders for academia, business, and government. - Offering the University of Auckland Faculty of Business and Economics as a respected neutral venue for deep dialogue about critical issues and problems facing New Zealand’s energy future. As a new director, my vision for the EC is to strive for excellence in energy research and education that promote the energy sector’s long-term efficiency, fairness, security, and sustainability in Aotearoa New Zealand. The EC's research efforts are focused on Electricity, which is our overarching research theme.

Our last seminar series event for 2024 attracted a full-house and was presented by Brent Rees, Hitachi Energy, Country Managing Director, entitled 'Engineering Solutions for New Zealand's Sustainable Energy Future.' Here are several salient outtakes. New Zealand currently has a projected growth in energy of 70% by 2050, according to a recent study by Boston Consulting Group. The energy sector's challenges include balancing the needs for having sustainable, secure and affordable energy, also known as the 'Energy Trilemma.' The incredible expertise across the sector offers many opportunities to collaborate and develop sustainable supply and energy security solutions. A big thank you from our Director, Emilson Silva, to Brent Rees and Bertle Vermeulen for sharing your many innovative, exciting projects and potential solutions Hitachi Energy is developing in New Zealand and worldwide. #Energy #EnergySupply #EnergyDemand #Research #Energysustainabiity #energysecurity

A secure energy future for New Zealand. Join us to hear our guest speaker John Carnegie, who will be discussing, and questioning, how New Zealand is at an energy cross-roads. Recent events and public debate have highlighted our lack of energy security resulting in shutdowns and job loses – our energy system now seems to be lurching from crisis to crisis. As a country with a rich natural resource endowment, how did we find ourselves in this position, is it as bad as its being reported and what can we do to rectify it? What steps can we take to ensure New Zealand’s energy security while achieving our long-term climate goals? Transitioning to cleaner energy sources has skyrocketed the demand for rare earth minerals and metals. Economist-led research focused on critical minerals and geopolitical challenges, highlighted the consequences that may hinder the global energy transition. China is the dominant leader in the supply and production of rare earth minerals, critical to powering the ubiquitous mobile phone and electric vehicle batteries. Two economists and authors of this groundbreaking research are our Director, Emilson Silva, and Professor Joāo Ricardo Faria, who highlighted the influence of China’s geopolitical strategies and its effects on production and consumption of critical minerals, on electric goods’ consumption and habit formation, and on the global energy transition. #energy #energydemand #energysupply
